Animal magnetism, also known as mesmerism, is a theory invented by German doctor Franz Mesmer in the 18th century. It posits the existence of an invisible natural force (''Lebensmagnetismus'') possessed by all living things, including humans, animals, and vegetables. Louis Léopold Robert (13 May 1794 – 20 March 1835) was a Switzerland, Swiss Painting, painter. Biography He was born at La Chaux-de-Fonds (Canton of Neuchâtel, Neuchâtel) in Switzerland, but left his native place with the engraver Jean Girardet at the age of sixteen for Paris. He was on the eve of obtaining the ''grand prix'' for engraving when the events of 1815 blasted his hopes, for Neuchâtel was restored to Prussia, and Robert was struck off the list of competitors as a foreigner. Stefan Banz (11 September 1961 – 16 May 2021) was an artist and curator. Banz was born in Sursee, Switzerland, and grew up in Menznau. In 1989, he co-founded the Kunsthalle Luzern and served as its artistic director until 1993. From 1994 to 1997 he was an artistic advisor for the Hauser & Wirth, Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Zürich, Zurich, where he organised exhibitions with Gerhard Richter, Francis Picabia, Bruce Nauman and others. Raphael Zalman Soyer (December 25, 1899 – November 4, 1987) was a Russian-born American painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Soyer was referred to as an American scene painter. He is identified as a Social Realist because of his interest in men and women viewed in contemporary settings which included the streets, subways, salons and artists' studios of New York City. Victor Wendell Ganz (1913–1987) was an American business owner and art collector. He was the president of D. Lisner & Company, a small costume jewelry manufacturer. With limited resources he and his wife Sally Wile-Ganz built one of the most important collections of contemporary art in the 20th century. They became known for their ability to choose art, as "collectors who never made a mistake". Their collection was sold after their deaths in record-setting auctions. Société Anonyme, Inc. was an art organization founded in 1920 by Katherine Dreier, Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. The society sponsored lectures, concerts, publications, and exhibitions of modern art, including the International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Brooklyn Museum in 1926. Between 1920 and 1940 they held 80 exhibitions showing mostly Cubism, Cubist and abstract art. Their galleries in their "first modest headquarters" were at 19 East 47th Street. Man Ray picked the name "S.A. (corporation), Société Anonyme", having seen it in French magazines, but knowing little French, assumed it referred to some anonymous society.
