Louis Kampf
Louis Kampf (May 12, 1929 – May 30, 2020) was an American professor of literature and former president of the Modern Language Association. Louis Kampf was born on May 12, 1929 in Vienna. In 1938 he fled Nazi Germany with his parents, and, via Belgium, France, and Morocco, arrived in the United States in 1941. He attended George Washington High School in New York City, then Long Island University on a basketball scholarship, and then graduate school in comparative literature at the University of Iowa. From 1958 to 1961, he was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University, the last year of which he spent at the American Academy in Rome. Kampf taught in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Humanities Department from 1961 to 1995 and was literature chair from 1967-1969. Emigration is the act of leaving a resident country or place of residence with the intent to settle elsewhere (to permanently leave a country). Conversely, immigration describes the movement of people into one country from another (to permanently move to a country). A migrant ''emigrates'' from their old country, and ''immigrates'' to their new country. Thus, both emigration and immigration describe migration, but from different countries' perspectives.
