Louis H. Wilson
Louis Hugh Wilson Jr. (February 11, 1920 – June 21, 2005) was a United States Marine Corps four-star general and a World War II recipient of the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Guam. He served as the 26th commandant of the Marine Corps from 1975 until his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1979, after 38 years of service. Early life Wilson was born on February 11, 1920, in Brandon, Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1941 from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where he participated in football and track. Wilson was also an active member of the Alpha Iota chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, initiated on February 23, 1939. He has many relatives residing in Mississippi to this day. Brandon is a city in and the county seat of Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. It was incorporated on December 19, 1831. The population was 25,138 as of the 2020 census. A suburb of Jackson, Brandon is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Area, and is located east of the state capital. History The city is named for Gerard Brandon, Governor of Mississippi during the early 1800s. A newspaper, ''The News'', was established in 1892. Navy And Marine Corps Commendation Medal
The Commendation Medal is a mid-level United States military decoration presented for sustained acts of heroism or meritorious service. Each branch of the United States Armed Forces issues its own version of the Commendation Medal, with a fifth version existing for acts of joint military service performed under the Department of Defense. The Commendation Medal was originally only a service ribbon and was first awarded by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard in 1943. The Pacific Ocean theater of World War II was a major theater of the Pacific War, the war between the Allies and the Empire of Japan. 9th Marine Regiment (United States)
The 9th Marine Regiment was an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps. Formed during World War II, it served until 1994, when it was deactivated during the post Cold War drawdown. Battalions of the Ninth Marine Regiment, but not the regiment itself, were reactivated from 2007 to 2014 as part of the Marine Corps' growth during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
