Lou Daily
Louis Joseph Daily (31 January 1911 – 29 August 1974) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood Football Club, Collingwood and Geelong Football Club, Geelong in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) as well as Subiaco Football Club, Subiaco in the West Australian Football League, West Australian National Football League (WANFL). Collingwood recruited Daily from Subiaco, who he had played with from 1931 and he made his VFL debut in 1933 VFL season, the 1933 season. He spent just one season with Collingwood before crossing to Geelong 1934 VFL season, for the following season. In his first game for Geelong, in round one against St Kilda Football Club, St Kilda, Daily kicked ten goals. Mount Lawley is an inner northern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The suburb is bounded by the Swan River (Western Australia), Swan River to the east, Vincent Street, North Perth, Vincent, Harold and Pakenham Streets to the south, Central Avenue and Alexander Drive to the north, and Norfolk Street to the west. In Australian sport, the best and fairest award recognises the player(s) adjudged to have had the best performance in a game or over a season for a given sporting club or competition. The awards are sometimes dependent on not receiving a suspension for misconduct or breaching the rules during that season. It is similar to most valuable player (MVP) awards in other team sports. In the Australian Football League (AFL), the Brownlow Medal is awarded to the player who, provided he has not been suspended during the season, receives the most votes from the umpire (Australian rules football), umpires for being the fairest and best player in games during the season (sports), home-and-away season. The Goldfields Football League is an Australian rules football league based in the Goldfields-Esperance, Goldfields region of Western Australia. Founded in 1896 as Hannans District Football Association, the league enjoyed a seat and full voting rights on the Australian National Football Council until 1919. The first clubs to play Australian football were formed within the region, and the league helped popularise the sport in the region, helping to establish the sport and supplant Rugby football, Rugby in popularity. The GFL was known as the Goldfields Football Association (GFA) from 1901–07 and 1920–25, and as the Goldfields National Football League (GNFL) from 1926–87. The 1938 WANFL season was the 54th season of the West Australian Football League, Western Australian National Football League, and saw Claremont, under champion coach Johnny Leonard who had transferred from West Perth, win its first premiership after losing two Grand Finals and drawing the first one this season. The blue and golds were to win the following two premierships before a long period near the foot of the ladder after Claremont Oval was gutted by a fire in 1944. 1938 also saw triple Brownlow Medallist Haydn Bunton senior, enticed by the offer of employment, move to Subiaco and win the first of three Sandovers in only four seasons in Perth; however his presence overshadowed the rest of the team and the Maroons were to advance only one place compared to 1937, being handicapped by the loss of champion defender Lou Daily to the Goldfields where he led Mines Rovers Football Club, Mines Rovers to several premierships. The 1937 WANFL season was the 53rd season of the Western Australian National Football League. The season saw numerous notable highlights, including: #Five players kicked 100 goals, a number equalled in the major leagues of VFL/AFL, VFA/VFL, or SANFL, only in the 1939 VFA season. # Frank "Scranno" Jenkins won the Sandover Medal in his debut season of senior football with a record high under the 3-2-1 voting system of 34 votes. #In the second round, East Fremantle broke their own 21-year-old record for the highest score in league history. #East Perth drew three games in one season, a feat equalled in major Australian Rules Leagues only by VFA club Moorabbin in 1958 and West Perth in 1960. The Royals could easily have drawn a fourth game but for crowd acclamation preventing umpires from hearing the bell against Subiaco on Foundation Day.
