While Mexican conjuntos play styles such as '' norteño'' and ''tejano'', Cuban ''conjuntos'' specialize in the ''son'', as well as its derivations such as ''salsa''. Falcon Records (Texas)
Falcon Records was a record label from McAllen, Texas, that was instrumental in the establishment of tejano as a widespread musical style. Founded in 1948 by Arnaldo Ramirez, the label specialized in the rural '' norteño'' music which had been abandoned by the major labels. By the early 1960s it was clearly the leading tejano music label. Falcon was responsible for numerous recordings by Los Alegres de Terán, Chelo Silva, René y René, Roberto Pulido, and many other tejano and norteño artists of significance. Falcon's product gained international exposure through the syndicated television program ''Fanfarria Falcon.'' The label's activities wound down around 1990, and the recordings were purchased by EMI. National Records
National Records was a record label that was started in New York City by Albert Green in 1945 and lasted until early 1951. Big Joe Turner was signed at the beginning and remained until 1947. Billy Eckstine was also a big seller for the label as were The Ravens. Eileen Barton had a hit with " If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake", which was No. 1 for 10 weeks. Working as A&R men were Lee Magid, Bob Shad, Jesse Stone and Herb Abramson. Abramson went to Jubilee and then co-founded Atlantic with Ahmet Ertegun. From the beginning Dick Thomas was their foremost country and western artist, best remembered for his "Sioux City Sue" (1945). In 1953, National began distribution arrangements with Jubilee Records. National's masters were owned by Savoy, which later reissued many of them. South Texas
South Texas is a region of the U.S. state of Texas that lies roughly south of—and includes—San Antonio. The southern and western boundary is the Rio Grande, and to the east it is the Gulf of Mexico. The population of this region is about 4.96 million according to the 2017 census estimates. The southern portion of this region is often referred to as the Rio Grande Valley. The eastern portion along the Gulf of Mexico is also referred to as the Coastal Bend. Pedro Ayala
Pedro Ayala (June 29, 1911 – December 1, 1990), called "El Monarca del Acordeón", was a Mexican accordionist and songwriter from General Terán, Nuevo León, Mexico. Pedro Ayala was a pioneer of conjunto music with his distinctive accordion playing, receiving a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for his contribution to conjunto and folk music. Early life Ayala, the son of musician Emilio Ayala, began playing the accordion when he was 5 years old. His family migrated to the United States when Pedro was about eight years old, settling in the town of Donna, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley and working as farm laborers. At age ten, he began to accompany his father on gigs for local dances, playing the tambora (drum). By age fourteen, Pedro had learned the two-row button accordion, guitar and was playing with one of his favorite accordionists, Chon Alaniz.
