Lorenzo L. Shaw
Lorenzo L. Shaw (November 8, 1828 – 1907), commonly known as L. L. Shaw, was an American businessman who was active in coastal North Yarmouth, Massachusetts (today's Yarmouth, Maine), in the 19th century. He was the co-founder of Freeman, Shaw & Co., a cotton mill, and of Pumgustuck Water Company. Career After moving to Maine from his native New Hampshire, Shaw was a selectman in Lewiston, Maine. He resigned in 1865, two years after the town's incorporation. Holderness, New Hampshire
Holderness is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,004 at the 2020 census. An agricultural and resort area, Holderness is home to the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and is located on Squam Lake. Holderness is also home to Holderness School, a co-educational college-preparatory boarding school. History The Squam Lakes were a trade route for Abenaki Indians and early European settlers, who traveled the Squam River to the Pemigewasset River, then to the Merrimack River and seacoast. In 1751, Thomas Shepard submitted a petition on behalf of 64 grantees to colonial Governor Benning Wentworth for 6 miles square on the Pemigewasset River. The governing council accepted, and the town was named after Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holderness. The French and Indian War, however, prevented settlement until after the 1759 Fall of Quebec. Maine Supreme Judicial Court
The Maine Supreme Judicial Court is the highest court in the state of Maine's judicial system. It is composed of seven justices, who are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Maine Senate. From 1820 until 1839, justices served lifetime appointments with a mandatory retirement age of 70. Beginning in 1839, justices are appointed for seven-year terms, with no limit on the number of terms that they may serve or a mandatory retirement age. Joseph York Hodsdon (October 20, 1836 – February 24, 1901) was an American businessman and politician from Maine. A resident of Yarmouth, he was a Republican state senator from 1899 to 1901 and a shoe manufacturer. Early life Hodsdon was born on October 20, 1836, in Portland, Maine, to Andrew Hodsdon and Rachel May York. Career Between 1869 and 1880, Hodsdon operated Caldwell & Hodsdon, a shoe factory in Portland. In 1880, he relocated to Yarmouth, taking over the former Farris tannery, where he established Hodsdon Brothers & Company by the town's Fourth Falls, at the western end of today's Royal River Park. In 1888, he built a large, modern factory building in the town.
