Loredan Popa
Loredan Popa, (15 July 1980, Vaslui, Romania) is a Romanian flatwater canoeist and current (2005) World and European champion in the Canadian canoe C-4 500m event. Popa's first international title came in 2000 as a member of the Romania crew that won the C-4 1000m and C-4 500 m gold medal at the European under-23 championship in Boulogne, France. In 2002 in Zagreb, Croatia, Popa won gold medals in both the C-4 500m and 1000m events. In the C-2 final in Zagreb, he partnered with his brother Constantin and took the bronze medal. He then moved from his hometown club of Constructorul Hunedoara in Hunedoara, Romania to Romania's premier club Dinamo Bucharest. Račice (Litoměřice District)
Račice (german: Ratschitz) is a municipality and village in Litoměřice District in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 300 inhabitants. It is the major rowing and flatwater canoeing venue in the Czech Republic. Etymology The name is derived from the personal name Radek, meaning "the village of Radek's people". Silviu Simioncencu
Silviu Simioncencu (born December 13, 1975, in Crişan, Tulcea) is a Romanian sprint canoer and three-time world champion in the Canadian canoe events. He won his first major title at the European championships in 2002, winning the C2 1000m final with Florin Popescu. In 2003 they became world champions at Gainesville, USA. Simioncencu was also a member of Romania's C-4 500 m crew which crossed the line second but was later awarded the gold medal after Russian Sergey Ulegin failed a doping test. A fourth-place finish in the C-4 200 m was also upgraded to bronze for the same reason. In 2004 Simioncencu also won a C-4 500 m gold medal at the European championships, this time without the aid of disqualifications. Florin Popescu
Florin Popescu (born 30 August 1974 in Iancu Jianu, Olt) is a Romanian sprint canoer who competed from the mid-1990s to 2005. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won two Olympic medals at Sydney in 2000 with teammate Mitică Pricop (gold: C-2 1000 m, bronze: C-2 500 m). He won a total of seven world championship gold medals (and nineteen total) as well as seven European championship golds, making him the most successful Romanian paddler of modern times. Injury forced Popescu to retire at the end of the 2005 season after winning his seventh world title (C-4 500 m) at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. 2005 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships
The 2005 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships were held in Zagreb, Croatia, in August 2005. Men race as individuals, pairs and quads over 200m, 500m and 1000m in both Canoe (Canadian) (C) and Kayak (K) events, giving a total of 18 gold medals. Women compete for only 9 gold medals as they race in kayak events only. This was the 34th championships in canoe sprint. Highlights The undoubted stars of the Zagreb event were Natasa Janics and Katalin Kovács of Hungary who completed an unprecedented clean sweep of all three women's K-2 events.
