Lord Stirling Manor Site
The Lord Stirling Manor Site is a historic site located at 96 Lord Stirling Road in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township in Somerset County, New Jersey. It was the property of the American General William Alexander, Lord Stirling. It is now part of Lord Stirling Park. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 22, 1978, for its significance in military and social history. With History Lord Stirling acquired the land from his father in 1761 and constructed the manor complex in 1763. It was one of the finest homes in the region, and local residents referred to his estate as "The Buildings." After his death in 1783, the property was sold, and the structures fell into disrepair. The house was rebuilt in 1825, though not according to the original design, and destroyed by fire in 1919. The Historical Marker Database
The Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org) is an online database that documents locations of numerous historical markers and commemorative plaques in the United States as well as other countries. The database was launched in 2006 by computer programmer J. J. Prats. The HMdb was launched in 2006 with 179 markers that Prats had personally documented. Slavery in New Jersey began in the early 17th century, when the Dutch trafficked African slaves for labor to develop the colony of New Netherland. After the English took control of the colony in 1664, they continued the importation of slaves from Africa. They also imported "seasoned" slaves from their colonies in the West Indies and enslaved Native Americans from the Carolinas. Most Dutch and English settlers entered the colony as indentured servants, who worked for a fixed number of years to repay their passage.
