Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. The History Of Parliament
The History of Parliament is a project to write a complete history of the United Kingdom Parliament and its predecessors, the Parliament of Great Britain and the Parliament of England. The history will principally consist of a prosopography, in which the history of an institution is told through the individual biographies of its members. After various amateur efforts the project was formally launched in 1940 and since 1951 has been funded by the Treasury. As of 2019, the volumes covering the House of Commons for the periods 1386–1421, 1509–1629, and 1660–1832 have been completed and published (in 41 separate volumes containing over 20 million words); and the first five volumes covering the House of Lords from 1660-1715 have been published, with further work on the Commons and the Lords ongoing. Edward Henry Cooper
Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Henry Cooper (1827 – 26 February 1902) was an Irish officer in the British Army, a landlord in County Sligo, and a Conservative politician. At the age of 36 the Dublin-born soldier inherited Markree Castle in County Sligo from his uncle, and left the army to manage his country estate. As one of the major landlords in the county, he assumed many of the roles which still accompanied that status. He promptly became a local magistrate, and in 1865 was returned unopposed by the county to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Having followed five previous Cooper landlords of Markree to serve as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sligo, his unpopularity as a landlord led to his defeat in 1868, after one term. He then reactivated his uncle's Markree Observatory, and commissioned archaeological drawings of County Sligo. Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Baronet
Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 4th Baronet (25 August 1805 – 21 December 1876) was an Anglo-Irish politician and landowner, who built Lissadell House, located in County Sligo. Background and education Born at Bath, Somerset, he was the son of Sir Robert Gore-Booth, 3rd Baronet and his wife Hannah, the daughter of Henry Irwin.Dod (1860), p. 125 In 1814, aged only nine, he succeeded his father as baronet. He was educated at Westminster School and went then to Queens' College, Cambridge, graduating with a Master of Arts in 1826. Sir Francis Knox-Gore, 1st Baronet
Sir Francis Knox-Gore, 1st Baronet (1803 – 25 May 1873) was an Anglo-Irish baronet. Knox-Gore was the son of James Knox-Gore and Lady Maria Louisa Gore, daughter of Arthur Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College Dublin. Knox-Gore was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Sligo on 5 December 1831. In 1840 he served as High Sheriff of Mayo. Colonel Joshua Edward Cooper ( – 8 June 1837) was an Irish landowner and politician from County Sligo. Cooper was the oldest son of Joshua Cooper MP (1732–1800) of Markree Castle, and his wife Alicia, daughter of Edward Synge, Bishop of Elphin. He was the older brother of Edward Synge Cooper. Owen Wynne (1755–1841)
Owen Wynne (1755 – 12 December 1841) was an Irish landowner and politician. He was the son of Owen Wynne (1723–1789) of Hazelwood, an MP of the Parliament of Ireland, and his wife the Hon. Anne Maxwell. He succeeded to his father's estates in 1789, inheriting Hazelwood House, Sligo. He was elected a Member of the Irish Parliament for Sligo Borough for 1776–1790 and 1791–1800. After the act of Union he sat as MP for Sligo in the UK Parliament in 1801–1806, resigning his seat by taking the notional crown office of profit as Escheator of Munster. He returned many years later as MP for Sligo borough in 1820–1830. He was appointed custos rotulorum for County Sligo for life in 1789 and High Sheriff of Sligo for 1819–20 and High Sheriff of Leitrim for 1833–34. He died in 1841. Charles O'Hara (died 1822)
Charles O'Hara (16 April 1746 – 19 September 1822) was an Irish landowner and politician. He was born the son of Charles O'Hara (1715–1776) of Annaghmore, County Sligo, an MP in the Parliament of Ireland. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford and entered the Middle Temple in 1765 to study law. He was called to the Irish bar in 1771 and succeeded his father in 1776. He was then the leading landowner in Count Sligo and was a Member of Parliament in the Parliament of Ireland for Dungannon in 1776, sitting until 1783. He was afterwards MP for Sligo County from 1783 until the Union with Great Britain in 1800/01. County Sligo ( , gle, Contae Shligigh) is a county in Ireland. It is located in the Border Region and is part of the province of Connacht. Edward King, 1st Earl Of Kingston
Edward King, 1st Earl of Kingston PC (I) (29 March 1726 – 8 November 1797) was an Anglo-Irish politician and peer. He was the eldest son of Sir Henry King, 3rd Baronet and Isabella Wingfield, daughter of Edward Wingfield. He had a twin sister Frances, who married Hans Widman Wood of Rosmead, County Westmeath and had issue, including Isabella. He sat in the Irish House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Boyle between 1749 and 1760, before sitting for County Sligo from 1761 to 1764. On 22 May 1755 he succeeded to the family baronetcy following the premature death of his elder brother, Robert King, 1st Baron Kingsborough.
