Longstone, Edinburgh
Longstone is a suburb of Edinburgh in Scotland. The area is primarily residential in nature, although the area includes several small shops, eateries and supermarkets, as well as one of the main bus depots for the city's buses. The population of Longstone (including Saughton) was 4,678 in 2019. History For much of its early history, Longstone was used for agricultural purposes, with three farms being recorded in the 18th century. Inglis Green Road and manor house lie on the border between Longstone and Slateford. The name Inglis Green was given in 1773 when George Inglis of Redhall leased the land to a local businessman for use as a cloth Bleaching Green. The area was formerly the site of a pre-18th century farmstead known as Gray's Mill Farm (used very briefly as a temporary headquarters by Charles Edward Stuart in September 1745) and subsequently developed as a mill and then as a laundry until closing in 1983. Little Longstone
Little Longstone is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district, in the county of Derbyshire, England. The village is on a minor road west of Great Longstone, just off the B6465 road from Wardlow to Ashford-in-the-Water. There is a Grade-II-listed Congregational Chapel and a public house, the Packhorse Inn, in the village. As in many small parishes, there is no parish council and local democracy is administered via a parish meeting. In 2001 the parish had a population of 103. The parish includes parts of Monsal Dale and the hamlet of Monsal Head, and lies wholly within the Peak District National Park. The Monsal Trail, a popular cycleway and footpath following a section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, runs just south of the village. Longstone Rath
Longstone Rath () is a ringfort (''rath'') and National Monument located in County Tipperary, Ireland. Location Longstone Rath is located on a height overlooking the Barna–Emly road, 1.6 km (1 mile) west-southwest of Cullen. History and archaeology The longstone, a lump of limestone about 2.3 m (7′ 7″) in height, is located on a mound within a bivallate ringfort. The site was excavated in 1973–76, where 4,000 potsherds, 6 complete vessels, over 400 flint scrapers, cremated bones and grooved ware pottery were found. The mound is thought to date from c. AD 1 (mid-Iron Age), with the rath being added about AD 600. The Longstones
The Longstones are two standing stones, one of which is the remains of a prehistoric ' cove' of standing stones, at , close to Beckhampton in Avebury parish, in the English county of Wiltshire. Two stones are visible, known as 'Adam' and 'Eve' although the latter is more likely to have been a stone that formed part of the Beckhampton Avenue that connected with Avebury. The avenue probably terminated here although it may have extended further to the south west beyond the stones. William Stukeley recorded the site in the eighteenth century when it was only partially destroyed and suggested it extended further although modern excavation and archaeological geophysics have not confirmed this. Adam is the larger of the two stones, weighing an estimated 62 tons, and along with three others formed a four-sided cove. The Longstone, Mottistone
The Longstone is a megalithic monument near the village of Mottistone, close to the south west coast of the Isle of Wight. It is the only megalithic monument on the Island. Description and location The Longstone consists of two pieces of local greensand sandstone probably from a vein away. The larger stands at and the smaller lies at its foot. They are on the edge of a wood in small fenced enclosure just off Strawberry Lane, near Mottistone. The name Mottistone (the Speaker's or pleader's stone) almost certainly derives from the Longstone. The stones and the surrounding land are in the care of the National Trust and are open to the public. Until the mid nineteenth century the smaller stone was further south but in 1856 a local landowner, Lord Dillon, had it turned over to discover if it had a mortise hole (it did not). Longstone Lighthouse
Longstone Lighthouse is an active 19th century lighthouse located on Longstone Rock in the outer group of the Farne Islands off the Northumberland Coast, England. Completed in 1826, it was originally called the Outer Farne Lighthouse, and complemented the earlier Inner Farne Lighthouse. The lighthouse is best known for the 1838 wreck of the ''Forfarshire'' and the role of Grace Darling, the lighthouse keeper's daughter, in rescuing survivors. History Origins The Farne Islands had a long history of needing a light to warn ships of the many surrounding hazards. Great Longstone with Little Longstone is one of two villages in the local government district of Derbyshire Dales in Derbyshire, England. The population (including Hassop and Rowland, but not Little Longstone) as taken at the 2011 Census was 843.
