Longerenong is a locality in the Rural City of Horsham and the Shire of Yarriambiack, Victoria, Australia. At the , Longerenong had a population of 237. The agricultural college Longerenong College is located in Longerenong. The name is derived from a Jardwadjali word meaning "the dividing of the waters." History In 1844, William Taylor and Dugald McPherson established a pastoral run near the division of the Wimmera River, where one branch forms the Yarriambiack Creek. By 1848, Taylor became the sole proprietor of his portion, naming it Longerenong. He sold the run in 1856 to brothers Charles and Samuel Wilson, the latter of whom built the Longerenong Homestead in 1862 and later funded Wilson Hall at the University of Melbourne. In the 1870s, parts of the run were opened for farming, and a short-lived school operated from 1877 to 1879. Longerenong College, often abbreviated ''Longy'', is an agricultural college in western-Victoria near the city of Horsham, Victoria. The focus of study at the College is "agronomy, rural merchandise management, wool classing, agricultural education, farm management, research and livestock sales." The College is based around a residential campus in the locality of Longerenong. The college includes a 1070 hectare farm "with cropping, sheep and beef cattle enterprises." History The college was founded in 1889 by the Council of Agricultural Education. Enrolments however were not sustained and the college was closed from 1898 to 1905, although the farm remained operational during that period. The original buildings were destroyed by fire in 1940 and students used temporary buildings until the 1960s, when new residences and assembly hall were built. Samuel Wilson (Portsmouth MP)
Sir Samuel Wilson (7 February 1832 – 11 June 1895) was an Irish-born Australian Pastoralism, pastoralist and politician, and later a British Member of Parliament. Early life Wilson was born in Ballycloughan railway station, Ballycloughan, County Antrim, Ireland, in 1832. He was educated at Ballymena and at first intended taking up civil engineering. For three years he worked for a brother-in-law Robert Chesney, a linen manufacturer, but in 1852 decided to emigrate to Australia. Australian entrepreneur He arrived in Melbourne in May 1852 and worked on the goldfields, but a few months later decided to join two brothers who had preceded him to Australia, and had a pastoral property in the Wimmera. The Wemba Wemba language is an extinct Aboriginal Australian language once spoken along the Murray River and its tributaries in North Western Victoria and South Central New South Wales. Wimmera River
The Wimmera River, an inland intermittent river of the Wimmera catchment, is located in the Grampians and Wimmera regions of the Australian state of Victoria. The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) lists places deemed to be of cultural heritage significance to the State of Victoria, Australia. It has statutory weight under the Heritage Act 2017.
