Long Good Friday
''The Long Good Friday'' is a 1980 British gangster film directed by John Mackenzie from a screenplay by Barrie Keeffe. Starring Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren, the film, set in London, weaves together events and concerns of the late 1970s, including mid-level political and police corruption and IRA fund-raising. The supporting cast features Eddie Constantine, Dave King, Bryan Marshall, Derek Thompson, P.H. Moriarty, Paul Freeman and Pierce Brosnan in his film debut. John Mackenzie (film Director)
John Leonard Duncan Mackenzie (22 May 1928 – 8 June 2011) was a Scottish film and television director. He worked in British film from the late 1960s, first as an assistant director and later as an independent film director, director himself. Early life Mackenzie was born in Edinburgh, where he attended Holy Cross Academy, Edinburgh, Holy Cross Academy. He studied history at the University of Edinburgh. He studied drama and joined Edinburgh's Gateway Theatre (Edinburgh), Gateway Theatre Company. He worked as a teacher and moved to London in 1960. Career Early career Mackenzie began his career with Ken Loach, acting as the latter's assistant director on such works as ''Up the Junction (The Wednesday Play), Up the Junction'' (1965) and ''Cathy Come Home'' (1966). Bryan Marshall
Bryan Marshall (19 May 1938 – 25 June 2019) was a British actor, with a number of major credits in film and television to his name, in both Britain and Australia. Early life Marshall was born in Battersea, south London. He was educated at the Salesian College, Battersea, and trained as an actor at RADA, graduating in 1963, before appearing at the Bristol Old Vic and in repertory theatre and in the 1986 first national tour of ''The Sound of Music'' as Captain von Trapp. Film Marshall's best-remembered film role is that of Councillor Harris in '' The Long Good Friday'' (1980). London Docklands is an area of London encompassing the city’s former docks. ''Empire'' is a British film magazine published monthly by Bauer Media Group. The first issue was published in May 1989. History David Hepworth of Emap, the publisher of British music magazines '' Q'' and '' Smash Hits'', proposed the idea of launching a film magazine similar to ''Q''. They recruited ''Smash Hits'' editor Barry McIlheney to edit the new magazine, with Hepworth as Editorial Director. Hepworth drafted a one-page proposal outlining the magazine's objectives, including a commitment to reviewing and rating every film released in UK cinema. The proposal also stated, "''Empire'' believes that movies can sometimes be art, but they should always be fun."
