Long Branch (Salt River)
Long Branch is a stream in Boone, Audrain and Monroe counties of the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary of the Salt River within the waters of Mark Twain Lake. The stream source is in northeast Boone County about 1.5 miles west of Centralia at . The stream flows generally north through western Audrain County and into southwestern Monroe County just west of the community of Tulip. The stream turns east and generally follows the Audrain-Monroe county line for approximately 17 miles. Then the stream turn north and passes west of Santa Fe for about 3.5 miles to its confluence with the Salt River, at . Long Branch was so named on account of its relatively long length. Boone County is located in the U.S. state of Missouri. Audrain County is a county located in the central part of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,962. Its county seat is Mexico. The county was organized December 13, 1836, and named for Colonel James Hunter Audrain of the War of 1812 and who later was elected to the state legislature. History Audrain county was formed from a non-county area with portions under the administration of Montgomery, Callaway, Boone, Ralls, or Monroe counties at various times prior to its official establishment in 1836. Monroe County is a county in northeast Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,666. Its county seat is Paris. It is the birthplace of Mark Twain. History The county was organized January 6, 1831 and named for James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Monroe County was one of several along the Missouri River settled by migrants from the Upper South, especially Kentucky and Tennessee. They brought slaves and slaveholding traditions with them and quickly started cultivating crops similar to those in Middle Tennessee and Kentucky: hemp and tobacco. Salt River (Missouri)
The Salt River is a tributary of the Mississippi River in eastern Missouri in the United States. The river is approximately long and drains an area of in parts of twelve Missouri counties. It rises at the confluence of the North, Middle, and South Forks in Monroe County. Since Clarence Cannon Dam construction was completed in 1983, the first 15 miles of the Salt River after the confluence of the North, Middle, and South Fork have been contained in Mark Twain Lake. Below the dam, the river winds generally east for 63 miles through a rural valley surrounded by low bluffs. Below New London, it receives Spencer and Peno Creeks from the right. The Salt joins the Mississippi River at Ted Shanks Wildlife Conservation Area (River Mile 284) just one mile north of US Route 54 bridge in Louisiana in Pike County. Mark Twain Lake
Mark Twain Lake is a reservoir located in Ralls and Monroe Counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. It was created by the Clarence Cannon Dam (formerly called ''Joanna Dam'') impounding the Salt River and is located about southwest of Hannibal. The lake was named for Missouri author Mark Twain and part of the area around it is Mark Twain State Park. The village of Florida, the birthplace of Mark Twain, is mostly surrounded by the lake. Authorization and purpose In 1937 the Joanna Dam project was first proposed as an answer to many years of flooding by the Salt River. With support and expertise of many, including Representative Clarence Cannon, the multi-purpose project was authorized by Congress in the Flood Control Act of October 1962. Tulip, Missouri
Tulip is an unincorporated community in northwest Audrain and southwest Monroe counties, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The community is on Monroe county road 92. Long Branch flows past approximately one mile west and north of the site. Moberly is approximately 15 miles to the north-northwest in Randolph County and Centralia is eight miles south in northeast Boone County, Missouri. Santa Fe, Missouri
Santa Fe is an unincorporated community in southeastern Monroe County, Missouri, United States. It is located approximately twenty-five miles north of Mexico, near the southern edge of Mark Twain Lake. Santa Fe was founded in 1836 and named for Santa Fe, New Mexico. The post office at Santa Fe has been in operation since 1854. The Mark Twain State Park Picnic Shelter at Buzzard's Roost was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
