"Lonely Boy" is a song written and recorded by Paul Anka. Recorded in August 1958 with Don Costa's orchestra in New York, "Lonely Boy" was not released until May 11, 1959. Anka also sang this song in the film '' Girls Town'', which was released in October 1959. When released as a single, it topped the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 for four weeks, becoming Anka's first song to do so, although he had earlier topped Billboard's Best Sellers in Stores chart with "Diana". ''Billboard'' ranked it as No. 5 for 1959. The song reached No. 2 in the Canadian CHUM Charts. In 2007, "Lonely Boy" appeared on the ''Classic Songs'' (greatest hits) disc of Anka's album ''Classic Songs, My Way''. In 2018, the song was listed at number 235 on the 60th Anniversary of the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. Paul Albert Anka (born July 30, 1941) is a Canadian and American singer, songwriter and actor. His songs include " Diana", “ You Are My Destiny", “Lonely Boy", " Put Your Head on My Shoulder", and " (You're) Having My Baby". Anka also wrote the theme for ''The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson''; one of Tom Jones' biggest hits, " She's a Lady"; and the English lyrics to Claude François and Jacques Revaux's music for Frank Sinatra's signature song " My Way", which has been recorded by many, including Elvis Presley. He co-wrote three songs with Michael Jackson: " This Is It" (originally titled "I Never Heard") " Love Never Felt So Good", and " Don't Matter to Me", which became posthumous hits for Jackson in 2009, 2014, and 2018, respectively. Lonely Boy (film)
''Lonely Boy'' is a 1962 Canadian ''cinéma vérité'' documentary about the former teen singer Paul Anka. The film takes its name from Anka's hit song, " Lonely Boy", which he performs to screaming fans in the film. This short documentary makes use of hand-held cameras to record intimate backstage moments. It was produced by the National Film Board of Canada and directed by Roman Kroitor and Wolf Koenig. Influence ''Lonely Boy'' was a substantial influence on the Peter Watkins film '' Privilege''. Watkins had studied it in preparation for filming and his film deals with the phenomenal popularity of a pop singer and its abuse for political motives. One scene showing the central character, Steven Shorter, at a table with a venue owner is virtually a one-to-one reproduction of a scene in ''Lonely Boy'', even using the same name (Uncle Julie) for the like-mannered venue owner.
