London Sketch Club
__NOTOC__ The London Sketch Club is a private members' club for artists working in the field of commercial graphic art, mainly for newspapers, periodicals, and books. History The club was founded in 1898 by a breakaway group of members from the Langham Sketching Club, following a disagreement over whether to have hot or cold suppers after an evening's drawing. The founding members were Dudley Hardy, Phil May, Cecil Aldin, Walter Churcher, and Tom Browne. George Charles Haité was its first president. A joint exhibition with the Langham Sketching Club was held at the Mall Galleries in 1976. Dudley Hardy
Dudley Hardy Royal Institute of Oil Painters, ROI Royal Society of British Artists, RBA (15 January 1867 – 11 August 1922) was an English painter and illustrator. Life and work Hardy was the eldest son of the marine painter Thomas Bush Hardy, under whose influence and tutelage he first learned to draw and paint. In 1882 he attended the Düsseldorf Academy where he remained for three years. Terence Cuneo
Terence Tenison Cuneo RGI FGRA (1 November 1907 – 3 January 1996) was a prolific English painter noted for his scenes of railways, horses and military actions. He was also the official artist for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Life and work Terence Cuneo was born in London, the son of Cyrus Cincinato Cuneo (1879–1916) and Nell Marion Tenison (1881–1964), artists who met while studying with Whistler in Paris. Cyrus Cuneo's elder brother Rinaldo Cuneo was also an acclaimed painter in San Francisco, as was his youngest brother Egisto Cuneo. Terence Cuneo studied at Sutton Valence School in Kent, Chelsea Polytechnic and the Slade School of Art, before working as an illustrator for magazines, books and periodicals. Lance Thackeray
Lot "Lance" Thackeray (17 January 1867 – 10 August 1916) was an English illustrator, known especially for his comic sporting illustrations involving billiards and golf and for his many humorous postcards. Born in Darlington to Thomas Thackeray and his wife Selina Neish, Thackeray was baptized into the Church of England on 17 February 1867 at St John’s Church, Darlington. At the 1881 United Kingdom census, Thackeray, one of nine children, was aged fourteen and was still at school, while his father was recorded as a railway foreman porter. Two older sisters were a dressmaker and a milliner. His 82-year old maternal grandfather, originally from Scotland, was living with the family and was a gardener. Thackeray was a founding member of the London Sketch Club. Gyrth Russell (30 April 1892 - 8 December 1970) was an Anglo-Canadian artist best known for his Marine art, marine paintings and work as a war artist during the First World War. Early life Russell was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the youngest son of the politician and jurist Benjamin Russell (Canadian politician), Benjamin Russell. He studied at NSCAD University, Halifax School of Art and at Boston, before studying in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. First World War Russell was commissioned as a Canadian official war artists, Canadian official war artist and a range of his paintings and drawings, produced in northern France, are now in the collection of the Canadian War Museum. Russell painted views of Vimy Ridge, Arras and St Nazaire as shattered and devastated landscapes. Russell's works were exhibited at the Canadian War Memorial Exhibition in London in 1919. Charles Robinson (illustrator)
Charles Robinson (1870–1937) was a prolific British book illustrator. Biography Born in Islington, London, in October 1870, he was the son of illustrator Thomas Robinson, and his brothers Thomas Heath Robinson and William Heath Robinson also became illustrators. He served an apprenticeship as a printer and took art lessons in the evenings. He won a place at the Royal Academy in 1892 but was unable to take it up due to lack of finances. The first full book he illustrated was Robert Louis Stevenson's '' A Child's Garden of Verses'' (1896) which includes over 100 pen and ink drawings. It was extremely popular, going through many reprints, and generated numerous commissions. He illustrated many fairy tales, children's books and books written by Walter Copeland Jerrold and himself throughout his career. James Pryde
James Ferrier Pryde (30 March 1866 – 24 February 1941) was a British artist. A number of his paintings are in public collections, but there have been few exhibitions of his work. He is principally remembered as one of the Beggarstaffs, his artistic partnership with William Nicholson, and for the poster designs and other graphic work they made between 1893 and 1899, which influenced graphic design for many years. Bertram Stanley Prance (5 December 1889 – 9 August 1958) was a British artist, poster artist and illustrator who worked as a cartoonist for '' Punch'' magazine among others. Early life Prance was born in Bideford in Devon in 1889, one of five children of Deera Lock ''née'' Hollway (1861–1952) and Captain Fredrick William Prance (1859–1939) who was the owner and skipper of the fishing trawler 'Deera' (named after his wife), which operated out of the quayside in Bideford. Prance attended Bideford Art School and was a subscriber to the Press Art School, a correspondence course for drawing founded by Percy Bradshaw. Christopher Nevinson
Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (13 August 1889 – 7 October 1946) was an English figure and landscape painter, etcher and lithographer, who was one of the most famous war artists of World War I. He is often referred to by his initials C. R. W. Nevinson, and was also known as Richard. Nevinson studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks and alongside Stanley Spencer and Mark Gertler. Alfred Ambrose Chew Leete (1882–1933) was a Great Britain, British graphic artist. Born at Achurch, Thorpe Achurch, Northamptonshire, he studied at Kingsholme School and Weston College, The School of Science and Art (now Weston College) in Weston-super-Mare, before moving to London in 1899 and taking a post as an artist with a printer (publisher), printer.
