London Renters Union
The London Renters Union is a tenants' union in the United Kingdom founded in 2018. As of September 2024, the union represents 7,000 members across London. In the face of recession due to the COVID-19 pandemic, left-wing political group Momentum organised with tenants' unions such as the London Renters' Union, as well as ACORN, to educate renters about their tenancy rights and organise renters to fight evictions. Momentum began encouraging their supporters in to join the London Renters' Union in May 2020, and the campaign was in full swing by September. Following the Scottish Parliament enacting the Cost of Living (Tenant Protection) (Scotland) Act 2022, the London Renters Union called for a similar law to be enacted in England. From 2024, the LRU has called for rent control laws to be enacted. A tenants union, also known as a renters' union or a tenants association, is a group of tenants that collectively organize to improve the conditions of their housing and mutually educate about their rights as renters. Groups may also lobby local officials to change housing policies or address homelessness. The COVID-19 recession was a global economic recession caused by COVID-19 lockdowns. The recession began in most countries in February 2020. Momentum (organisation)
Momentum is a British left-wing political organisation which has been described as a grassroots movement supportive of the Labour Party (UK), Labour Party; since January 2017, all Momentum members must be (or become) members of the party. It was founded in 2015 by Jon Lansman, Adam Klug, Emma Rees and James Schneider after Jeremy Corbyn's successful campaign to become Labour Party leader and it was reported to have between 20,000 and 30,000 members in 2021. ACORN International is a federation of autonomous member-based community organizations and tenants unions. The organisations represent a total membership numbers are currently at approximately 250,000 members. Cost Of Living (Tenant Protection) (Scotland) Act 2022
The Cost of Living (Tenant Protection) (Scotland) Act 2022 is an Act of the Scottish Parliament which came into force on 27 October 2022. The Act freezes rents and establishes a moratorium on evictions for both the private rented and social sectors until at least 31 March 2023. Summary The provisions of the Act were considered by Scottish Ministers to be necessary or proportionate in connection with the cost of living. The Act restricts landlords from increasing the amount of rent they shall charge on residential tenancies, restricts evictions from residential tenancies, and allows Scottish Ministers to make regulations about matters a rent officer or a First-Tier Tribunal must consider in determining rent. Living Rent
Living Rent is a national tenants' union in Scotland. Originally established in 2014 as a campaign group urging the Scottish Government to implement rent controls, it subsequently became a mass membership organisation of tenants aiming to "tackle the power imbalance between landlords and tenants" through collective action. Living Rent is affiliated to ACORN International and is an associate member of the International Union of Tenants (IUT). Structure Living Rent is a democratic, members-led organisation. Members are organised in branches, typically at a neighbourhood level, each of which has a committee elected by local members. The Greater Manchester Tenants Union (GMTU, formerly Tenants Union UK) is a tenants union in Greater Manchester. The organization has been involved in several campaigns to protect and promote tenants rights in the region, including organizing to resist evictions, prevent the demolition of social housing projects and promote legislation that would limit short-term lets. History Prior to 2020, the Greater Manchester Tenants Union was known as Tenants Union UK, in service to the entire United Kingdom.
