London Power Tunnels
London Power Tunnels is a project by National Grid plc to reinforce the electricity transmission network in London, UK, by constructing more than 60 km of new deep-level tunnels carrying high-voltage cables. The new network of tunnels replaces a series of ageing power cables, most of which were buried directly beneath roads. These were becoming unreliable, difficult to maintain without disrupting traffic, and were unable to meet future demand for electricity. The new tunnels allow the power cables to be upgraded and maintained without disruption to traffic and residents on the surface. The project is divided into two phases: the first phase involved constructing tunnels connecting substations at Wimbledon, Hackney, and Willesden, and was completed in 2018. Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnels
The Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnels, known as the PLUG (Power Line Under Ground) Project during construction, are a pair of 6 km cable tunnels running beneath the lower Lea Valley in east London. Constructed at a cost of £130m ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games, they are owned by National Grid plc and UK Power Networks. The two tunnels run south from Hackney substation to West Ham substation at a depth of 20-30m below ground. One tunnel is 4.15m in diameter and carries a 400 kV circuit as part of the National Grid, while the other tunnel is 2.82m in diameter and carries a 132 kV circuit as part of the London power distribution network. The New Cross to Finsbury Market Cable Tunnel is a long, diameter tunnel beneath London which carries power distribution cables for UK Power Networks as part of the London power distribution network. It was built between 2009 and 2017 by J. Murphy & Sons. The tunnel runs at a depth of , from New Cross substation in Lewisham to Finsbury Market substation in Hackney, close to the edge of the City of London. Along the route, it connects substations at Osborn Street in Whitechapel and Wellclose Square in Wapping, passing beneath the River Thames downstream of Tower Bridge. Highbury
Highbury is a district in North London and part of the London Borough of Islington in Greater London that was owned by Ranulf brother of Ilger and included all the areas north and east of Canonbury and Holloway Roads. The manor house was situated by what is now the east side of Hornsey Road near the junction with Seven Sisters Road. After the manor decayed, a new manor house was built in 1271 (see below) to the south-east; to differentiate it from the original manor and because it was on a hill, it was called Highbury, from which the area takes its name. The site for Highbury Manor was possibly used by a Roman garrison as a summer camp. During the construction of a new Highbury House in 1781, tiles were found that could have been Roman or Norman; however, these have been lost.
