Lois Vierk
Lois V. Vierk (born August 4, 1951 in Hammond, Indiana) is a post-minimalism, post-minimalist composer who lives in New York City. She received a B.A. degree in piano and ethnomusicology from UCLA in 1974. She then attended Cal Arts, studying composition with Mel Powell, Leonard Stein, and Morton Subotnick, receiving her M.F.A. in 1978. She has conducted extensive study of ''gagaku'' music, studying for ten years with Suenobu Togi in Los Angeles, and for two years in Tokyo with Sukeyasu Shiba (the lead ''ryuteki, ryūteki'' player in Japan's Imperial Court Orchestra). She has written many chamber works for different ensembles which are multiples of the same instrument. Her work uses glissando prominently and builds exponential growth, exponentially in level of activity. Hammond ( ) is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. Located along Lake Michigan, it is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the only city in Indiana to border Chicago. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, it is the List of municipalities in Indiana, eighth-most populous city in Indiana, with 77,879 residents. It was first settled in the mid-19th century and it is one of the oldest cities of northern Lake County.
