Loftus Roker
Hon. A. Loftus Roker (25 August 1935 – 13 May 2024) was a Bahamian Progressive Liberal Party politician. He was considered a "founding father" of the modern nation. His hard-line approach to illegal immigration and drug trafficking made him a defining political figure in his era. Early life and education Roker was born on 25 August 1935 to Elkin and Dolores Theodora Roker. He attended the local school in Pompey Bay and the Western Senior High School in New Providence. Roker graduated with a law degree at the University of London and was a member of the Middle Temple. He was called to the Bar in 1962. Political career Roker ran in the 1968 Bahamian general election Early general elections were held in the Bahamas on 10 April 1968. The result was a victory for the Progressive Liberal Party, which won 29 seats. Voter turnout was 85.5%.Colin A. Acklins
Acklins is an island and district of the Bahamas. It is one of a group of islands arranged along a large, shallow lagoon called the Bight of Acklins, of which the largest are Crooked Island () in the north and Acklins () in the southeast, and the smaller are Long Cay (once known as Fortune Island, ()) in the northwest, and Castle Island in the south. Etymology The indigenous Lucayan people called the Acklins as ''Yabaque'', meaning "large western land". History The islands were settled by American Loyalists in the late 1780s who set up cotton plantations maintained by over 1,000 slaves. After the abolition of slavery in the British Empire the plantations became uneconomical, and the replacement income from sponge diving has now dwindled as well with the rest of the natural sponge industry after the advent of synthetics.
