Loen Church
Loen Church ( or ) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Stryn Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Loen, Norway, Loen. It is the church for the Loen parish which is part of the Nordfjord prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in an Churches in Norway#Floor plan, octagonal design in 1838 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 190 people. There are two stone pillars in the churchyard that memorialize the local residents who died in 1905 and 1936 when the rock slides from the mountain Ramnefjellet caused tsunamis which flooded many farms surrounding the lake Lovatnet. Stryn Municipality
Stryn is a municipality in the county of Vestland, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Nordfjord. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Stryn. The municipality is located along the innermost part of the Nordfjorden. Some of the main villages in Stryn include Loen, Innvik, Utvik, Randabygda, Olden, and Flo. Farming, forestry, fruit growing, animal breeding for furs, small manufacturing industries, tourism, and the service trades provide the main occupations. Stave Church
A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church building once common in north-western Europe. The name derives from the building's structure of post and lintel construction, a type of timber framing where the load-bearing ore-pine posts are called ''stafr'' in Old Norse (''stav'' in modern Norwegian). Two related church building types also named for their structural elements, the post church and palisade church, are often called 'stave churches'. Originally much more widespread, most of the surviving stave churches are in Norway. The only remaining medieval stave churches outside Norway are: Hedared stave church () in Sweden and the Vang Stave Church which was built in Norway and relocated in 1842 to contemporary Karpacz in the Karkonosze mountains of Poland. Jacob Neumann
Jacob Neumann (13 July 1772 – 25 January 1848) was a Norwegian bishop. Personal life He was born in Strømsø as a son of Hans Neumann (1745–1789) and Annechen Johanne Blom (1754–1773), and a grandson of Jakob Hansen Neumann. He was also a first cousin of Gustav Peter Blom and Gustava Kielland and a second cousin of Christian Blom. In February 1800 in Copenhagen, he married pharmacist's daughter Justine Marie Agnete Bruun (1780–1838). They had the grandchildren Henrik, Jakob and Emanuel Mohn and Kristofer Janson. Career He studied under Christian Kølle at Snarøya from 1781 to 1785 and in Elsinore from 1785 to 1787, before enrolling at the University of Copenhagen, where he graduated in 1796 with the cand.theol. degree. A provost is a senior official in a number of Christian denomination, Christian churches. Historical development The word (Latin for 'set over', from , 'to place in front') was originally applied to any ecclesiastical ruler or dignitary. It was soon more specifically applied to the immediate subordinate to the abbot of a monastery, or to the superior of a single Monk, cell, and it was defined as such in the Rule of St Benedict. Elling Olsson Walbøe
Elling Olsson Walbøe (26 May 1763 – 13 December 1831) was a Norwegian farmer, builder, and member of the Norwegian Constituent Assembly. Walbøe was born at the Valbø farm in Ørskog parish in Romsdalen county, Norway. Later he bought the Nedre-Lande farm in the same parish. Walbøe was the builder of at least three octagonal churches: Leikanger Church in Møre og Romsdal and Innvik Church in Vestland, both of which still exist, as well as Hareid Church in Møre og Romsdal, which was demolished during the 1870s. From 1799 to 1827, Walbøe served as a member of the Conciliation Commission (''forlikskommissær'') which mediated private disputes at Ørskog in Møre og Romsdal. Church Porch
A church porch is a room-like structure at a church's main entrance. A porch protects from the weather to some extent. Some porches have an outer door, others a simple gate, and in some cases the outer opening is not closed in any way. The porch at St Wulfram's Church, Grantham, like many others of the period, has a room above the porch. It once provided lodging for the priest, but now houses the Francis Trigge Chained Library. Such a room is sometimes called a parvise which spelt as parvis normally means an open space or colonnade in front of a church entrance. In Scandinavia and Germany the porch of a church is often called by names meaning weaponhouse. Choir (architecture)
A choir, also sometimes called quire, is the area of a church or cathedral that provides seating for the clergy and church choir. It is in the western part of the chancel, between the nave and the sanctuary, which houses the altar and Church tabernacle. In larger medieval churches it contained choir-stalls, seating aligned with the side of the church, so at right-angles to the seating for the congregation in the nave. Smaller medieval churches may not have a choir in the architectural sense at all, and they are often lacking in churches built by all denominations after the Protestant Reformation, though the Gothic Revival revived them as a distinct feature. The first buildings may have been post churches erected in the 10th or 11th century, but the evidence is inconclusive.
