Loch Moidart
Loch Moidart is a sea loch in the district of Moidart in the Scottish Highlands. It is on the west coast of Scotland, and runs about 8 km (5 miles) eastward from the sea. It is connected to the sea by two narrow channels which are separated by the island of Eilean Shona, which in turn is nearly split in two by a narrow isthmus. The River Moidart enters the loch at its head, near the hamlet of Ardmolich. Various views of the loch have featured as an Apple TV screensaver since 2021. The A861 runs along the loch's northern shore; it is a remote circuitous route which connects to the A830 at both ends, without passing through any significant settlements. Castle Tioram
Castle Tioram (; , meaning "dry castle") is a Ruin, ruined castle that sits on the tidal island Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, Scotland. It is west of Acharacle, approximately from Fort William, Highland, Fort William. Though hidden from the sea, the castle controls access to Loch Shiel. It is also known locally as Dorlin Castle. The castle is a scheduled monument. History Castle Tioram was one of Somerled's castles in his time (the 12th century), though some may date it from the 13th or 14th century. It appears to have originally been a principal stronghold of Clann Ruaidhrí. Eilean Tioram, the island the fortress sits upon, is first recorded in a charter of Cairistíona Nic Ruaidhrí, daughter of Ailéan mac Ruaidhrí. According to early modern tradition, preserved by the 17th-century ''Sleat History'', the castle was erected by Ailéan's granddaughter, Áine Nic Ruaidhrí. Moidart
Moidart ( ; ) is part of the remote and isolated area of Scotland, west of Fort William, Highland, Fort William, known as the Rough Bounds. Moidart itself is almost surrounded by bodies of water. Loch Shiel cuts off the eastern boundary of the district (along a south-south-west to north-north-east line) and continues along part of the southern edge. The remainder of the southern edge is cut off by Loch Moidart. The north is cut off by Loch Morar and Loch Ailort. Scottish Highlands
The Highlands (; , ) is a historical region of Scotland. Eilean Shona
Eilean Shona () is a tidal island situated at the entrance of Moidart, Loch Moidart, on the west coast of Scotland, just north of the Ardnamurchan, Ardnamurchan Peninsula. The island is in area, with the highest point being Beinn a' Bhàillidh at . There are five other peaks of over and views of the sea and off-shore islands including Rhum, Eigg and Skye. It is reached by a short boat ride from the mainland (Dorlin Pier 4 km (25 miles) north of Acharacle). The modern name may be from the Old Norse for "sea island". A861 Road
The A861 road is a circuitous, primarily coastal, road in Lochaber, within the Highland council area of Scotland. The A861 serves the communities of the remote Ardgour, Sunart, Moidart and Ardnamurchan areas Although the ends of this road are only apart (the direct link being by way of the A830 road) its total length is . The last stretch to be built was the part from Kinlochmoidart to Lochailort. It was opened on 29 July 1966 by the Minister of State for Scotland, George Willis M.P.
