Local Nature Recovery Strategy
Local Nature Recovery Strategies show how and where nature recovery can be best supported across the strategy's area. They were established under the Environment Act 2021, and involve mapping the habitats, agreeing proprities for their recovery, and mapping specific proposals for helping them recover. They focus on local needs and priorities, established through workshops, surveys and consultation. Their development involves working with partner organisations. For example in Cumbria these include Natural England, Lake District National Park Authority and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. The work is done using guidance from DEFRA. Examples include Cumbria, Northumberland, Lancashire, and Durham. Eventually there will be 48 of them, with variations between them in the ways they are established and operated within the guidelines. Environment Act 2021
The Environment Act 2021 (c. 30) of the Parliament of the United Kingdom aims to improve air and water quality, protect wildlife, increase recycling and reduce plastic waste. The act is part of a new legal framework for environmental protection, given the UK no longer comes under EU law post-Brexit. Friends of the Earth said the act represented a reduction in protections, rather than an increase. In January 2021 the bill was "severely delayed" for a third time. Details of the bill The bill included powers to prevent the export of plastic waste to developing countries, binding targets on air and water quality and wildlife conservation. The bill also contained provision for a new Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) watchdog and would create a framework for legally binding targets, such as to reduce particulate pollution. In ecology, habitat refers to the array of resources, biotic factors that are present in an area, such as to support the survival and reproduction of a particular species. Natural England is a non-departmental public body in the United Kingdom sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Yorkshire Dales National Park
The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a national park in England which covers most of the Yorkshire Dales, the Howgill Fells, and the Orton Fells. The Nidderdale area of the Yorkshire Dales is not within the national park, and has instead been designated a national landscape. Most of the park is within North Yorkshire, with a sizeable area in Cumbria and a small part in Lancashire. The park was designated in 1954, and extended in 2016. More than 95% of the land in the park is privately owned; there are over 1,000 farms in this area. In 2020, the national park was named an International Dark Sky Reserve. Wildlife Trust For Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire And Northamptonshire
The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire (WTBCN) is a registered charity which manages 126 nature reserves covering . It has over 35,000 members, and 95% of people in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire live within five miles of a reserve. As of 31 March 2016 it employed 105 people and had an income of £5.1 million. It aims to conserve wildlife, inspire people to take action for wildlife, offer advice and share knowledge. The WTBCN is one of 36 wildlife trusts covering England, and 46 covering the whole of the United Kingdom. It is a planning document that ensures that the anticipated take of a listed species will be minimized or mitigated by conserving the habitat upon which the species depend, thereby contributing to the recovery of the species as a whole. Habitat Destruction
Habitat destruction (also termed habitat loss or habitat reduction) occurs when a natural habitat is no longer able to support its native species. The organisms once living there have either moved elsewhere, or are dead, leading to a decrease in biodiversity and species numbers. Habitat destruction is in fact the leading cause of biodiversity loss and species extinction worldwide. Humans contribute to habitat destruction through the use of natural resources, agriculture, industrial production and urbanization (urban sprawl). Habitat fragmentation describes the emergence of discontinuities (fragmentation) in an organism's preferred environment (habitat), causing population fragmentation and ecosystem decay.
