Lobophylliidae
Lobophylliidae is a family of large polyp stony corals. The family was created in 2009 after a revision of the "robust" families of Faviidae, Merulinidae, Mussidae and Pectiniidae, which had been shown to be polyphyletic. The family Lobophylliidae was formed out of the Indo-Pacific species that had traditionally been included in Mussidae, and some of the species which had previously formed Pectiniidae, the remaining species from Pectiniidae having been merged into Merulinidae. The type genus is '' Lobophyllia''. Taxonomy The "robust" stony coral families of Faviidae, Merulinidae, Mussidae and Pectiniidae, have traditionally been recognised on morphological grounds but recent molecular analysis has shown that these families are polyphyletic, the similarities between the species having occurred through convergent evolution. Additionally, some traditional genera such as ''Favia'' and '' Scolymia'' have been found to be polyphyletic, with the Atlantic faviids and scolymids being m ...

Pectiniidae
Pectiniidae was a family of stony corals, commonly known as chalice corals, but the name is no longer considered valid. A revised classification, proposed in 2012, places the Pacific species of Mussidae in a new family, Lobophylliidae and retains the taxon Mussidae for the Atlantic species. In the revision, the genera '' Echinomorpha'', ''Echinophyllia'' and '' Oxypora'' were transferred from Pectiniidae to Lobophylliidae, and the genera '' Mycedium'', ''Pectinia'' and '' Physophyllia'' were transferred to Merulinidae. The family Pectiniidae was abolished. Genera The World Register of Marine Species used to include the following genera in the family: *'' Echinomorp ...

Lobophyllia Hemprichii
''Lobophyllia hemprichii'', commonly called lobed brain coral, lobed cactus coral or largebrain root coral, is a species of large polyp stony coral in the family Lobophylliidae. It is found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean. In its specific name Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg honoured his late partner the Prussian naturalist Wilhelm Hemprich; they were among the first to study the marine life of the Red Sea. Description ''Lobophyllia hemprichii'' is a colonial species of coral that may form hemispherical or flattened mounds up to in diameter. Several adjacent colonies, sometimes of different colours, may grow together to form a composite colony. The corralites (skeletal cups) may be phaceloid (having a tubular form and growing from a common base) or flabello-meandroid (arranged in valleys with the neighbouring valleys each having a ridge, with the valleys dividing irregularly). Each corallite has a number of septa (vertical blades inside the corallite cup) which taper in thickness and ha ...

Acanthastrea
''Acanthastrea'' is a genus of large polyp stony corals in the family Lobophylliidae. The colonies are massive and usually flat. The corallites are either circular or angular in shape. The septa are thick near the wall of the corallite, becoming thin near the columella, and have tall teeth. The polyps are extended only at night. The genus contains the following species: * ''Acanthastrea brevis'' Milne Edwards & Haime, 1849 * ''Acanthastrea echinata'' (Dana, 1846) * ''Acanthastrea hemprichii'' (Ehrenberg, 1834) * ''Acanthastrea minuta'' Moll & Best, 1984 * ''Acanthastrea pachysepta'' (Chevalier, 1975) * ''Acanthastrea polygonalis''† Martin, 1880 * ''Acanthastrea rotundoflora'' Chevalier, 1975 * ''Acanthastrea subechinata ''Acanthastrea'' is a genus of large polyp stony corals in the family Lobophylliidae. Faviidae
Mussidae is a family of stony coral in the order Scleractinia. Following a taxonomic revision in 2012, the family is now restricted to species found in the Atlantic Ocean, with Pacific species transferred to the new family Lobophylliidae. Many species are referred to as brain coral because their generally spheroid form and grooved surface resembles the convolutions of a brain. Members of this family are found in the reef aquarium trade. Though popular in captivity, they are under threat from environmental destruction like coral bleaching. The Mussidae is one of the coral families most vulnerable to climate change. Taxonomy The family Mussidae has long been recognised on morphological grounds but recent molecular analysis has shown that it, and several other related families, are polyphyletic, the similarities between the species having occurred through convergent evolution. Additionally, some traditional genera such as '' Favia'' and ''Scolymia'' have been found to be poly ...
