Ljubljana Pride
Ljubljana Pride is the annual Slovenian national LGBT, LGBTIQ pride march, held in its capital of Ljubljana each June. The name also refers to the week of LGBT-related events that are held in the city prior to the march. It is organized by the Pride Parade Society and strongly supported by the City of Ljubljana (a member of Rainbow Cities Network). History The first pride march was organized in 2001 as a reaction to the impatient and insulting behavior of the staff towards Brane Mozetič and Canadian poet Jean-Paul Daoust in front of the Ljubljana City Gallery. The Pride Parade then became an annual event. In 2009 several organizers of the event were attacked during an event at a cafe in the week prior to the march; one activist, Mitja Blažič, was hospitalized. Amnesty International released a statement calling on Slovenian authorities to condemn the incident and ensure that the Pride event could go on safely. Luka Mesec
Luka Mesec (born 1 July 1987) is a Slovenian politician and activist who has been the leader of the eco-socialist The Left party since June 2017. Mesec was elected to the Slovenian National Assembly for the first time at the 2014 parliamentary election, and reelected at the 2018 parliamentary election. He is the coordinator of the Council of the Initiative for Democratic Socialism, Labour-Punk University, and its successor, the Institute for Labour Studies. Early life and education Luka Mesec was born on 1 July 1987 in Kranj. He grew up in Železniki, where he finished elementary and high school, after which he enrolled in the political science program at the University of Ljubljana's Faculty of Social Sciences. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights in Slovenia have significantly evolved over time, and are considered among the most advanced of the former communist countries. Slovenia was the first post-communist country to have legalised same-sex marriage, and anti-discrimination laws regarding sexual orientation and gender identity have existed nationwide since 2016. Simon Maljevac
Simon Maljevac (born 26 February 1981) is a Slovenian LGBT rights activist, politician and current Minister of Solidarity-Based Future of Slovenia. He was the general-secretary of The Left from 2018 to 2022. Early life Maljevac was born 26 February 1981 in Postojna. He has a degree in sociology from the University of Ljubljana (2012). Maljevac is homosexual. Career Maljevac worked for communications engineering agency Directa and Legebitra, a LGBT NGO.
