Livia De Stefani
Livia De Stefani (23 June 1913 – 28 March 1991) was an Italian writer. Early life Livia De Stefani was born into a wealthy landowning family in Palermo, and educated at a convent. Career In midlife, De Stefani began writing fiction, and published her novel ''La vigna di uve nere'' (1953, published in English as ''Black Grapes''). She went on to write a collection of three short stories, ''Gli affatturati'' (1955), another collection of short stories, ''Viaggio di una sconosciuta'' (1963, ''Journey of an Unknown Woman''), several more novels, ''Passione di Rosa'' (1958, ''The Passion of Rosa''), ''La signora di Cariddi'' (1971, ''The Lady of Cariddi''), and ''La Stella Assenzio'' (1975, ''The Star Absinthe''), and a memoir, ''La mafia alle mie'' (1991, ''The Mafia Behind Me''). Renato Signorini
Renato Signorini (Asmara, 29 August 1902 – Rome, 30 December 1966) was an Italian sculptor, painter and medalist. Biography Renato Signorini was known for his sculpted heads in silver, ''vermeil'', glazed or gilded bronze and occasionally gold, portraying popes, monarchs and actresses. The sculptures, obtained using the so-called ''cire perdue'' casting technique, were later polished and often decorated with gems and semi-precious stones. Generally, the portraits were small half-length busts, depicting the subject in a front head pose gazing distantly, with simple and neat details, as inspired by the Tuscan renaissance portraiture. Jacques Sernas
Jokūbas Bernardas Šernas (30 July 1925 – 3 July 2015), commonly known as Jacques Sernas and sometimes credited as Jack Sernas, was a Lithuanian-born French actor with an international film career. 1968 Belice Earthquake
The 1968 Belice earthquake sequence took place in Sicily between 14 and 15 January. The largest shock measured 5.5 on the moment magnitude scale, with five others of magnitude 5+. The maximum perceived intensity was X (''Extreme'') on the Mercalli intensity scale. The earthquake sequence, centred between the towns of Gibellina, Salaparuta and Poggioreale, killed at least 231 people, possibly more than 400, with between 632 and about 1,000 injured and left 100,000 homeless. It is known in Italy as Terremoto del Belice. Tectonic setting Sicily lies on the complex convergent plate boundary between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The geology of the western part of the island is dominated by the Gela Nappe, a thin-skinned fold and thrust belt. Elsa Morante (; 18 August 191225 November 1985) was an Italian novelist, poet, translator and children's books author. Her novel ''La storia'' (''History'') is included in the Bokklubben World Library List of 100 Best Books of All Time. Life and career Elsa Morante was born in Rome in 1912, the daughter of Irma (née Poggibonsi), a schoolteacher, and Augusto Morante. Her mother came from a Jewish family in Modena. When she was a teenager Morante discovered that Francesco Lo Monaco, a family neighbor, was her biological father. Except for a brief period during World War II, she resided in Rome until her death in 1985. Morante started writing at an early age. Without having much support from her parents, she relied mostly on self-education. She began writing short stories in the mid-1930s. Maria Bellonci
Maria Villavecchia Bellonci (30 November 1902 – 13 May 1986) was an Italian writer, historian and journalist, known especially for her biography of Lucrezia Borgia. She and Guido Alberti established the Strega Prize in 1947. Biography Bellonci was born Maria Villavecchia in Rome on 30 November 1902. Her father, Gerolamo Vittorio Villavecchia, was a professor of chemistry, and came from an aristocratic Piedmontese family, while her mother, Felicita Bellucci, came from Umbria. She had three younger siblings, a brother Leo and a sister, Gianna. From 1913, she studied at the Liceo Umberto, graduating in 1921. She married the journalist Goffredo Bellonci in 1928. Following the Second World War, the Belloncis established a salon at their residence, the ''Amici della domenica'' (''Friends of Sunday'') inviting Italian literates to discuss the promotion of Italian culture. Vitaliano Brancati (; 24 July 1907 – 25 September 1954) was an Italian novelist, dramatist, poet and screenwriter. Biography Born in Pachino, Syracuse, Brancati studied in Catania, where he graduated in letters and where he spent the most part of his life.
