''Livewire'' was a music periodical published between 1991 and 1997, specializing in rock and metal music. History The magazine was headed by editor Mike Smith, formerly of '' Powerline''. Appearing on newsstands in September 1991, its format and art direction largely followed in the footsteps of its predecessor. Canadian author Martin Popoff was a reviewer for the magazine. Acquisition and reboot In 1996, parent company Kearny Publishing was sold to new owners in Florida and renamed Princeton Publishing. Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. ''Powerline'' was a music magazine, covering the metal music, metal scene, published between 1985 and 1991. History At its inception, ''Powerline'' was edited by Dean Papazidis and Patrick Prince, also a US correspondent for British publication Metal Forces. The first issue's cover story was an interview with SPV GmbH, SPV recording artists Sortilège (band), Sortilège. For the first three years, the magazine was distributed independently through record stores across the New York metropolitan area, Tri-State area. Originally priced at $2 and consisting of a 32-page black and white folio, it started incorporating color photography in year two. In 1988, Prince and new business partner Mike Smith founded a publishing company to take ''Powerline'' to newsstands, and signed a national distribution agreement with the Kable News Company. Martin Popoff
Martin Popoff (born April 28, 1963) is a Canadian music journalist, critic and author. He is mainly known for writing about the genre of heavy metal music. The senior editor and co-founder of ''Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles'', he has additionally written over twenty books that both critically evaluate heavy metal and document its history. He has been called "heavy metal's most widely recognized journalist" by his publisher. Popoff lives in Toronto, Ontario. Career Born in Castlegar, British Columbia, Popoff's interest in heavy metal began as a youth in Trail, British Columbia, in the early 1970s, when bands such as Led Zeppelin and Iron Butterfly were in the collections of the older brothers and cousins of Popoff and his friends. Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s.
