Liverpool Edge Hill
Liverpool Edge Hill was a borough constituency within the city and metropolitan borough of Liverpool, in the English county of Merseyside, centred on Edge Hill. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first-past-the-post voting system. The constituency was created in 1918 and abolished in 1983. History There were two by-elections in Liverpool Edge Hill, following the deaths of its incumbent Members of Parliament. At the 1947 by-election, Labour held the seat with a reduced majority, but the 1979 by-election saw a large swing against Labour who lost the seat to the Liberal David Alton — a defeat which foreshadowed Labour's national loss in the 1979 general election. When the constituency disappeared for the 1983 general election, 59.85% of its territory was transferred to the new constituency of Liverpool Mossley Hill, where David Alton was re-elected. David Patrick Paul Alton, Baron Alton of Liverpool, (born 15 March 1951) is a British-Irish politician, formerly a Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party and later Liberal Democrat who has sat as a crossbench member of the House of Lords since 1997 when he was made a life peer. Alton is also known for his human rights work including the co-founding of Jubilee Action, the children's charity (which changed its name to Chance for Childhood in 2014), and serves as chair, patron or trustee of several charities and voluntary organisations. In December 2024 Alton was elected Chair of the UK Parliament Joint Committee on Human Rights. 1931 United Kingdom General Election
The 1931 United Kingdom general election was held on Tuesday, 27 October 1931. It saw a landslide election victory for the National Government, a three-party coalition which had been formed two months previously after the collapse of the second Labour government. Journalist Ivor Bulmer-Thomas described the result as "the most astonishing in the history of the British party system". Unable to secure support from his cabinet for his preferred policy responses to the economic and social crises brought about by the Great Depression, Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald split from the Labour Party and formed a new national government in coalition with the Conservative Party and a number of Liberals. MacDonald subsequently campaigned for a "Doctor's Mandate" to do whatever was necessary to fix the economy, running as the leader of a new party called National Labour within the coalition. Jack Hayes (politician)
John Henry Hayes (14 October 1887 – 25 April 1941) was a British police officer, trade unionist and politician. After serving in the Metropolitan Police, he became general secretary of the National Union of Police and Prison Officers. In 1923, he became the first Labour Member of Parliament in Liverpool when he was elected to represent Edge Hill. From 1929 to 1931, he served in government as Vice-Chamberlain of the Household. Early life and police career Hayes was born on 14 October 1887 in Wolverhampton to policeman John William Hayes and his wife Sarah Inchley. He married Ethel Stroudley in 1913 and they had one daughter. He joined the administrative staff of the Metropolitan Police in 1909. He became known for speaking for officer's rights and the right to union organization, and he was an early member of the National Union of Police and Prison Officers.
