Liv Holtskog
Liv Holtskog (4 August 1934 – 21 July 2014) was a Norwegian fruit farmer and poet. She was born in Gvarv. She made her literary debut in 1966 with the poetry collection ''Kanskje ein''. Other collections are ''Dagane millom'' from 1969, ''Skurdsong'' from 1971, and ''Det lova landet'' from 1974. Her poetry contains motifs from the Telemark nature, biblical motifs, and allusions to fairy tales. Several of her poems are used as songs, and some have been performed as choral works. Among composers who have made melodies to her works are Gisle Kverndokk and Sigmund Groven. Gvarv
Gvarv is a village in Sauherad, Telemark, Norway. Gvarv is famous for its apples, sweet cherries and sour cherries (as is the whole Sauherad municipality). Also (unusually for Norway) grapes and wine! The Norwegian painter Erik Werenskiold painted a number of his famous rustic landscapes, such as ''Telemarksjenter'' ("Girls from Telemark"), in the vicinity of Gvarv. Gvarv is also the host for the music festival Kartfestivalen and the apple festival Eplefest. Kartfestivalen is a pop/rock festival in the middle of August. Sagavoll folkehøgskole ( folk high school) is located in Gvarv. Telemark
Telemark is a traditional region, a former county, and a current electoral district in southern Norway. In 2020, Telemark merged with the former county of Vestfold to form the county of Vestfold og Telemark. Telemark borders the traditional regions and former counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. The name ''Telemark'' means the " mark of the Thelir", the ancient North Germanic tribe that inhabited what is now known as Upper Telemark in the Migration Period and the Viking Age. In the Middle Ages, the agricultural society of Upper Telemark was considered the most violent region of Norway. Today, half of the buildings from medieval times in Norway are located here. Gisle Kverndokk
Gisle Kverndokk (born 3 February 1967 in Trondheim, raised in Skien) is a Norwegian contemporary composer. Education In his teens, Kverndokk studied composition with Ragnar Søderlind. After having completed high school, Kverndokk enrolled at the Norwegian Academy of Music from which he graduated with diploma in 1994, having studied under the tutorship of Olav Anton Thommessen, Lasse Thoresen and Alfred Janson. Kverndokk has also studied at the Juilliard School in New York with John Corigliano and David Diamond. Career 1992 saw Kverndokk being bestowed with one of the main prizes of the Juilliard Composers Competition with his orchestral work ''Selene''. For his work ''Initiasjon for fiolin og orkester'', Kverndokk received the 1993 First Prize in the category for composers under the age of 30 at the International Rostrum of Composers held in Paris. Sigmund Groven
Sigmund Groven (born 16 March 1946 in Heddal, Telemark) is a Norwegian classical harmonica player, today considered one of the world's leading classical harmonica players. He plays with a large number of the world's leading musicians and orchestras, and he has made 23 recordings yet in his own name (compilations not counted). His repertoire ranges from popular and folk music to his own compositions, from Bach to contemporary music. Influences and early career Groven grew up in a family with rich music and cultural traditions. His uncle was the folk musician and composer, Eivind Groven (1901–77). As a child, he heard Tommy Reilly playing harmonica on radio, and was fascinated by what he heard.
