Liu Chien-kuo
Liu Chien-kuo (; born 9 March 1969) is a Taiwanese politician. A former member of the Yunlin County Council, he has represented Yunlin County in the Legislative Yuan since 2009. Education Liu has earned two bachelor's degrees, one from National Open University in public administration and the other from Meiho University in social work. He also earned a master's degree from Nanhua University. Political career Liu served on the Yunlin County Council before running for a legislative seat in 2008. In January 2008, he filed a lawsuit against Chang Sho-wen, accusing Chang of bribery. He had lost to the Kuomintang candidate in the legislative elections held that month and in June 2009, Chang's election was annulled. Liu faced Lee Ying-yuan in a primary, and received the official backing of the Democratic Progressive Party. A by-election for Chang's vacated seat was held in September, and Liu won handily. The 11th Legislative Yuan is the current term of members of the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China (Taiwan) which began on 1 February 2024. Members were elected in the 2024 Taiwanese legislative election, 2024 legislative election, in which the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lost majority status. This is the first time since the election of 2004 Taiwanese legislative election, 2004 that no party received an absolute majority in the Legislative Yuan. Koo Kwang-ming
Koo Kwang-ming (; 15 October 1926 – 27 February 2023) was a Taiwanese statesman, businessman, and Taiwanese independence, independence activist. Personal life Koo was the eighth son of Koo Hsien-jung, a prominent Lukang businessman who had relocated to Taipei at the time of the Treaty of Shimonoseki, when Taiwan was ceded by the Qing Dynasty to the Empire of Japan. He swiftly made common cause with the Japanese colonial authorities in Taiwan and grew extremely wealthy during the period of Taiwan under Japanese rule, Japanese rule. The family proved adept at bending with the political winds, and Koo's older brother Koo Chen-fu became a confidant of Chiang Kai-shek. Koo Kwang-ming, however, went into exile in Japan after the 228 massacre, where he lived for decades as an advocate for Taiwanese independence. Yunlin is a county in western Taiwan. Yunlin County borders the Taiwan Strait to the west, Nantou County to the east, Changhua County to the north at the Zhuoshui River, and Chiayi County to the south at the Beigang River. Ractopamine
Ractopamine () is an animal feed additive used to promote leanness and increase food conversion efficiency in farmed animals in several countries, but banned in others. Pharmacologically, it is a phenol-based TAAR1 agonist and β adrenoreceptor agonist that stimulates β1 and β2 adrenergic receptors. It is most commonly administered to animals for meat production as ractopamine hydrochloride. It is the active ingredient in products marketed in the US as Paylean for swine, Optaflexx for cattle, and Topmax for turkeys. It was developed by Elanco Animal Health, a former division of Eli Lilly and Company. As of 2014, according to the Humane Society, the use of ractopamine was “banned or restricted” in 160 countries, including the European Union, China and Russia, while it is legal in 27 other countries, such as Japan, the United States, South Korea, and New Zealand. The status of United States beef imports has been an issue in Taiwan–United States relations. Controversy has centered on cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE; commonly known as mad cow disease), and the use of ractopamine as an additive in feeds. The conflict has sometimes been called the "beef war" in the media, similar to the UK–EU Beef war over BSE.
