''Little Black Spiders'' is a 2012 Belgian drama film directed by Patrice Toye. The film is set in 1978 and tells the story of a group of teenage girls who are sent to a secluded maternity ward to give birth in secret. The film explores themes of social shame, hidden pregnancies, force adoptions and institutional control. Plot In 1978, sixteen-year-old Katja is sent to a secret attic ward in a hospital where pregnant teenage girls are hidden from society. Each girl has her own backstory—some are victims of abuse, others of social prejudice. Cinema Of Belgium
Cinema of Belgium refers to the film industry based in Belgium. Belgium is essentially a bi-lingual country divided into the Flemish ( Dutch-speaking) north and the French-speaking south. There is also a small community of German speakers in the border region with Germany. Belgium is further a federal country made up of three regions (the Flemish Region, the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital Region) and three language communities (the Flemish Community (Dutch-speaking), the French (i.e., French-speaking) Community and the German-speaking Community). Due to these linguistic and political divisions it is difficult to speak of a national, unified Cinema of Belgium. It would be more appropriate to talk about Flemish or Dutch-language cinema of Belgium and Walloon or French-language cinema of Belgium. History Early history While the invention of the cinématographe by the Lumière brothers is widely regarded as the birth of cinema, a number of developments in photogr ...

The Magdalene Sisters
''The Magdalene Sisters'' is a 2002 drama film written and directed by Peter Mullan, about three teenage girls who were sent to Magdalene asylums (also known as Magdalene laundries), homes for women who were labelled as " fallen" by their families or society. The homes were maintained by individual religious orders, usually by the Catholic Church. Peter Mullan has remarked that the film was initially made because victims of Magdalene asylums had received no closure in the form of recognition, compensation or apology, and many remained lifelong devout Catholics. Former Magdalene inmate Mary-Jo McDonagh told Mullan that the reality of the Magdalene asylums was much worse than depicted in the film. Some people have questioned some of the depictions of these institutions in the film. Though set in Ireland, the film was shot entirely on location in Dumfries and Galloway, South-West Scotland. The film was distributed by Miramax, run at the time by Harvey Weinstein. The convent used ...
