Lithuanian Uruguayans
A Lithuanian Uruguayan is a Uruguayan citizen who is fully or partially of Lithuanian descent. Lithuanians migrated to Uruguay mostly during the 1920s and 1930s; they eventually reached the 10,000-people-mark. They established their own institutions, such as the Uruguay-Lithuania Cultural Association and several Lithuanian-language newspapers, notably Naujoji Banga. There is also a small Lithuanian Jewish community in Montevideo. The 2011 Uruguayan census revealed 104 people who declared Lithuania as their country of birth. José Gurvich
José Gurvich (January 5, 1927 – June 24, 1974) was a Uruguayan painter, potter, musician and a key figure in the Constructivism Art movement. Life and career Zusmanas Gurvicius was born on January 5, 1927, in Jieznas, Lithuania, to Jacob Gurvich and Jaie Galperas, Lithuanian Jews. In 1931 his father Jacob, seeking freedom from religious persecution and a better future for his family, emigrated to Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1932 Jacob sent for his wife and two children. Once they arrived they moved into Barrio Sur, a neighborhood consisting mainly of European immigrants. His father began working as a barber, and later opened many barbershops of his own throughout the city. He was enrolled in elementary school under the name of José Gurvich, as school officials could not understand why his father's surname was Gurvich and his Gurvicius. Sergio Gorzyczanski Jones (born 14 June 1958) is a Uruguayan sports journalist, sportscaster and television presenter. With an extensive career, since the mid-1970s Gorzy has hosted numerous sports and variety shows on radio and television, including ''Pasión'', ''La Hora de los Deportes'' and ''Cámara Celeste''. Leonel Eduardo Pilipauskas Rodríguez (born 18 May 1975) is a Uruguayan retired professional footballer who played as a defensive midfielder, and is the assistant manager of Bella Vista. Club career Pilipauskas was born in Montevideo. In his country, he played for C.A. Bella Vista, Peñarol and Centro Atlético Fénix. This was punctuated by a spell with Spanish club Atlético Madrid in the 1999–2000 season, which was anything but successful (only four La Liga matches, relegation to Segunda División). Vladas Doukšas
Vladas Douksas Klimite (14 March 1933 – 23 November 2007) was an Uruguayan footballer. Douksas played in the Uruguayan and Argentine leagues during the 1950s and 1960s and played in a South American Championship-winning Uruguay team in 1959. Biography Douksas was born 1933 in Montevideo to Vaclav (originally Vaclovas) and Emilia (originally Emilija), both Lithuanian immigrants, and was brought up in the suburb of Capurro. The Lithuanian version of his name is Vladas Daukšas Klimaitis. His father had worked for a chemical company before opening a small shop of his own.
