Between the 1870s and 1890s, the Italian (Royal Navy) built a series of torpedo cruisers, as part of a program intended to strengthen the fleet during a period of limited naval budgets. A total of six different ship class, classes comprising eighteen vessels were constructed. The first vessel, , was keel laying, laid down in 1875, and was one of the first torpedo cruisers built by any navy. was a torpedo cruiser of the built for the Italian (Royal Navy) in the 1880s. The ship was built at the , beginning with her keel laying in August 1885 and ending with her completion in August 1889. She was armed with a variety of light guns and five torpedo tubes, and was capable of a top speed of . The ship spent her career in the main Italian fleet conducting training exercises, and did not see action. She spent 1898 patrolling the eastern Mediterranean Sea with the Levant Squadron. was withdrawn from service in 1901 and broken up for scrap that year.
