This is a list of Mayor of Montreal, mayors of Montreal, Quebec, since the city was incorporated in 1832. Party colours do not indicate affiliation or resemblance to a provincial or a federal party. Mayors of Montreal Applebaum is the most recent non-francophone mayor, the last being James John Edmund Guerin in 1912. Applebaum is the first Jewish mayor for the city with previous holders either French Canadian, Scottish, Irish or English descent. Mayor Of Montreal
The mayor of Montreal is head of the executive branch of the Montreal City Council. The current mayor is Valérie Plante, who was elected into office on November 5, 2017, and sworn in on November 16. The office of the mayor administers all city services, public property, police and fire protection, most public agencies, and enforces all city and provincial laws within Montreal, Quebec. The mayor is directly elected by citizens, by a plurality (voting), plurality of votes, for a four-year term (unless a vacancy occurs). The mayor's office is located in Montreal City Hall. Charles-Séraphin Rodier (mayor)
Charles-Séraphin Rodier (4 October 1797 – 4 February 1876) was a Canadians, Canadian merchant, lawyer, mayor of Montreal and Legislative Council of Quebec, legislative councillor of Quebec. Born in Montreal, Lower Canada, the son of Jean-Baptiste Rodier and Julie-Catherine Le Jeune, Rodier was a merchant who ran a dry goods shop in Montreal. He was the first merchant in Montreal to import goods from Great Britain and France. He retired in 1836. He decided to become a lawyer and stu died law with Samuel Cornwallis Monk and Alexander Buchanan (lawyer), Alexander Buchanan. He was admitted to the bar in 1841 but did not practice law. He was also a director of the Banque Jacques Cartier. He was a member of the Montreal City Council from 1833 to 1836. Honoré Beaugrand
Honoré Beaugrand (24 March 1848 – 7 October 1906) was a French Canadian journalist, politician, author and folklorist, born in Berthier County, Quebec. As a young graduate from military school Beaugrand joined the French military forces under General Bazaine in Mexico, supporting the ill-fated emperor Maximilian of Mexico. He returned with those troops to France after the fall of Chapultepec and Maximilian's execution. After some months he moved to New Orleans in 1868 and became a journalist. Subsequently, he wrote for U.S. newspapers in St. Louis, Missouri, St. Louis, Boston, Chicago, and Lowell, Massachusetts, Lowell and Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1878, he returned to Canada and founded the newspaper ''La Patrie (Canadian newspaper), La Patrie'' in Montreal to take the place of ''Le National (Montreal), Le National'' which had recently folded. Sévère Rivard
Sévère-Dominique Rivard (7 August 1834 – 4 February 1888) was a Canadian lawyer and politician, the Mayor of Montreal, Quebec between 1879 and 1881. After an education at the Séminaire de Nicolet, Rivard apprenticed in law under Rodolphe Laflamme and Edmund Barnard, formally becoming a lawyer in 1859. In 1870, Rivard was elected to city council at the Saint-Jacques ward and was re-elected to council in 1873. Between 1870 and 1877 he also served as a member of the city's Roman Catholic Board of School Commissioners. Rivard campaigned for mayor in 1879, defeating the allegedly undefeatable incumbent Jean-Louis Beaudry by a 290-vote margin. He ran unopposed in the 1880 election and enjoyed a second term as Mayor. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Quebec from 1886 until his death. Rivard died on 4 February 1888 after sustaining a case of "paralysis". William Hales Hingston
Sir William Hales Hingston (29 June 1829 – 19 February 1907) was a Canadians, Canadian physician, politician, banker, and Senate of Canada, Senator. Biography Born in Hinchinbrooke, Quebec, Hinchinbrooke near Huntingdon, Quebec, he received his MDCM from McGill University in 1851. In 1875, he became Mayor of Montreal and was re-elected by acclamation for a second and final term. He was president of the Montreal City and District Savings Bank (today the Laurentian Bank of Canada). In 1896, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada representing the senatorial division of Rougemont, Quebec. He sat as a Conservative Party of Canada (historical), Conservative and died in office. Aldis Bernard
Aldis Bernard ( 1810 – 3 July 1876) was a Canadian dentist and politician, the Mayor of Montreal, Quebec between 1873 and 1875. Dental career Bernard was educated in dentistry at Philadelphia, after which he practiced as a dentist in the southern United States. He married there and in 1840 moved back to Canada first residing in the Niagara Peninsula. In 1841, he settled in Montreal and established a dental practice there. When the government was planning a governing organisation for doctors in 1847, Bernard lobbied to have dentistry included in the law that would establish the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Lower Canada. This effort was unsuccessful largely due to the medical establishment's negative view of dentistry at that time. Francis Cassidy
Francis Cassidy, (17 January 1827 – 14 June 1873) was a Canadian lawyer and politician, the Mayor of Montreal, Quebec for three months in 1873, until his term was cut short by death. Cassidy was born at Saint-Jacques-de-l’Achigan, in what is today Quebec's Montcalm Regional County Municipality, Quebec. Despite spending childhood in a poor family, he attended Collège de l’Assomption with the support of Abbé Étienne Normandin. He began legal studies in Montreal, formally becoming a lawyer on 18 August 1848. After developing a distinguished legal career, he was designated Queen's Counsel on 5 August 1863. He was a founder of the Institut canadien de Montréal and served as its president between 1849 and 1850 and again between 1857 and 1858. Charles-Joseph Coursol
Charles-Joseph Coursol, (3 October 1819 – 4 August 1888) was a Canadian lawyer and politician, the Mayor of Montreal, Quebec between 1871 and 1873, and a member of Canadian Parliament from 1878 until his death. Baptised Michel-Joseph-Charles Coursol, he was born at Fort Malden, Upper Canada, located at what is now Amherstburg, Ontario. He was the son of Michel Coursol (d.1820), of the Hudson's Bay Company, and Marie-Mélanie Quesnel, daughter of Joseph Quesnel. His father died before he was one year old, and he was adopted and brought up like a son in the home of his uncle, The Hon. Frédéric-Auguste Quesnel. His early education was at the Petit Séminaire de Montréal, and afterwards he was apprenticed to his step-father Côme-Séraphin Cherrier for the legal profession until his formal installation as a lawyer on 24 February 1841. William Workman (Canadian Politician)
William Workman (May 1807 – 23 February 1878), of Mount Prospect House, Montreal, was an Irish-born Canadian entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist. He was a partner in Canada's largest wholesale hardware house of John Frothingham, Frothingham & Workman, and President of Montreal's City Bank. He was Mayor of Montreal and invested in railways, shipping, real estate and charity. His home was in Montreal's Golden Square Mile and he is buried at Mount Royal Cemetery.
