Duetto Buffo Di Due Gatti
The "Duetto buffo di due gatti" (humorous duet for two cats) is a performance piece for two sopranos and piano. Often performed as a comical concert encore, it consists entirely of the repeated word ''miau'' ("meow") sung by the singers. It is sometimes performed by a soprano and a tenor, or a soprano and a bass. While the piece is typically attributed to Gioachino Rossini, it was not actually written by him, but is instead a compilation written in 1825 that draws principally on his 1816 opera ''Otello''. Hubert Hunt claims that the compiler was Robert Lucas de Pearsall, who for this purpose adopted the pseudonym "G. Berthold". ''La serenata'' (''The Serenade'') is a one-act opera by Ruperto Chapí to a libretto by . It was first performed on 5 November 1881 at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. Background and performance history The libretto for ''La serenata'' was written in verse by José Estremera, a constant collaborator of Chapí, with whom he successfully staged the ' the previous year (1880). The story is based on a play by Eugène Scribe, ''La Xacarilla'' (1839). The opera is a result of a new attempt to create a full-composed national opera in Spain, to end the prevalence of zarzuela present at that moment. It is composed in a Rossinian style, reminding also of works by Paisiello and Cimarosa. The genre of the composition presented a difficulty. Chapí himself acknowledged its modest character. "La danza" (Dance) (1835) is a patter song by Gioachino Rossini, in Tarantella napoletana time, the eighth song of the collection ''Les soirées musicales'' (1830–1835). The lyrics are by Count Carlo Pepoli ( it), librettist of Vincenzo Bellini's opera ''I puritani''. "La danza" is a stand-alone chamber vocal piece, rather than part of a larger work.
