British rock group The Fall have released many compilation albums since the band's first releases in 1976. Early years 1977–1983 ''77-Early Years-79'' is a compilation of the band's first four singles, all originally issued on Step Forward Records, and was first released as an LP in 1981. One album track ("Dice Man" from '' Dragnet'') is also included, and a CD reissue in 2000 adds two tracks from the various artists compilation ''Short Circuit: Live at the Electric Ballroom'', from the same time. 2002's ''Early Singles'' drops "Dice Man" and adds three singles recorded for Kamera Records in 1981 and 1982, with their B-sides. In 2003, tracks from the Step Forward singles and two albums recorded for the label were selected for ''It's the New Thing! - The Step Forward Years''. The Fall (band)
The Fall were an English post-punk group, formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line-up changes, with vocalist and founder Mark E. Smith as the only constant member. The Fall's long-term musicians included drummers Paul Hanley, Simon Wolstencroft and Karl Burns; guitarists Marc Riley, Craig Scanlon and Brix Smith; and bassist Steve Hanley, whose melodic, circular bass lines are widely credited with shaping the band's sound from early 1980s albums such as ''Hex Enduction Hour'' to the late 1990s. First associated with the late 1970s punk movement, the Fall's music underwent numerous stylistic changes, often concurrently with changes in the group's lineup. Fiend With A Violin
The Fall released many recordings following their inception in 1976. The band’s debut on vinyl came in June 1978 when "Stepping Out" and "Last Orders" were released by Virgin Records on '' Short Circuit: Live at the Electric Circus'', a compilation of live recordings made at the Manchester venue The Electric Circus in October 1977 just before it was closed. Their first actual release as a group was the EP ''Bingo-Master's Break Out!'' (1978), and they released a studio album at a rate of almost one a year from their debut ''Live at the Witch Trials'' in 1979 to their final album ''New Facts Emerge'' in 2017. The Complete Peel Sessions 1978–2004
''The Complete Peel Sessions 1978–2004'' is a compilation box set by English post-punk band the Fall. It was released in 2005 by record label Castle Music. Content ''The Complete Peel Sessions'' comprises each of the twenty-four sessions the group recorded for John Peel's radio show. Peel was an avid supporter of the group from early in their career, and the Fall recorded more sessions for Peel's programmes than any other artist. The set was in the process of being compiled when Peel died in October 2004. The set charts almost all of the group's musical phases up until 2004. Release The box set's release was conceived by Sanctuary Records as part of a comprehensive reissue campaign to capitalise upon the recent success of ''The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click)'', which had been roundly praised as a "return to form" for the band. John Peel
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), known professionally as John Peel, was an English disc jockey (DJ) and radio presenter. He was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. He is widely acknowledged for promoting artists of multiple genres, including pop, dub reggae, punk rock and post-punk, electronic music and dance music, indie rock, extreme metal and British hip hop. Steve Hanley (musician)
Stephen Hanley (born 29 May 1959) is an Irish-born English musician who grew up in and lives in Manchester, He is best known as the bass guitarist in the Fall from 1979 to 1998. His distinctive and muscular basslines were a signature part of their sound, often carrying the songs' instrumental melodies. He is currently a member of Brix & the Extricated with guitarist and vocalist Brix Smith Start. Hanley was a foundational Fall member, second only to Mark E. Smith in longevity in the band. With Peter Hook, Andy Rourke and Gary Mounfield, he is widely considered one of the pre-eminent Manchester bassists of his generation. He has always been very private and rarely interviewed; for this reason his 2014 autobiography '' The Big Midweek: Life Inside The Fall'' was highly anticipated. ''50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong'' (subtitled ''39 Golden Greats'') is a greatest hits album by English post-punk band The Fall (band), the Fall, released in 2004 by record label Sanctuary Records, Sanctuary. Content ''50,000'' is the group's first career-spanning compilation album, with a selection of songs from the 1978 Extended play, EP ''Bingo-Master's Break-Out!'' up to the 2003 album ''The Real New Fall LP (Formerly Country on the Click)''. The selection of songs includes both singles and album highlights. Journalist and author, Daryl Easlea compiled the album and wrote the sleevenotes. The cover and title of the album is a parody of Elvis Presley's ''50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong'' (1959). Extricate
''Extricate'' is the 12th album by post-punk band the Fall. It was made immediately after bandleader Mark E. Smith divorced guitarist Brix Smith. Brix's departure helped define the sound of this album: her background vocals and relatively pop-oriented guitar, which had become mainstays of The Fall, are noticeably absent in this release. In one of the more unusual events in the group's career, she was replaced by founding former member Martin Bramah, who had previously left the group in 1979 to form his own group Blue Orchids. Lead-off single "Telephone Thing" could have been seen as a nod to the Manchester scene of the time as the sound is quite similar to the dance-influenced music that was being released by Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses in 1989. Edwyn Collins
Edwyn Stephen Collins (born 23 August 1959) is a Scottish musician, producer and record label owner from Edinburgh, Scotland. Collins was the lead singer for the 1980s post-punk band Orange Juice, which he co-founded. After the group split in 1985, Collins started a solo career. His 1995 single " A Girl Like You" was a worldwide hit. In February 2005, Collins was hospitalised after two cerebral haemorrhages which resulted in aphasia, and he needed months to recover. He resumed his musical career in 2007. A documentary film on his recovery, ''The Possibilities Are Endless'', was released in 2014. Collins was the co-founder of the indie record label Postcard Records and co-founded a second label, Analogue Enhanced Digital, in 2011. Inspiral Carpets
Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band, part of the late-1980s/early-1990s Madchester movement. Formed in Oldham in 1980, the band's most successful lineup featured frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh and keyboardist Clint Boon. Several line-ups were loosely used from 1980 until Lambert and singer Stephen Holt met at The Moor End indie disco in Oldham 1983. Holt sang on the first two independent singles.
