Lebanon
Lebanon, officially the Republic of Lebanon, is a country in the Levant region of West Asia. Huguette Caland
Huguette Caland (; née El Khoury; 19 January 1931 – 23 September 2019) was a Lebanese painter, sculptor and fashion designer known for her erotic abstract paintings and body landscapes. Based out of Los Angeles, her art was displayed in numerous exhibitions and museums. Early life Caland was born into a Lebanese political family in Beirut, Lebanon on 19 January 1931. Her father, Bechara El Khoury, became the first post-independence president of Lebanon in 1943, serving the country for nine years. Career Caland came to art somewhat late in life, beginning her studies at the American University in Beirut in her 30s. In 1970, she moved to Paris where she lived and worked as an artist for 17 years. She became a regular guest at the Feraud studio, meeting many artists, including André Masson, Pierre Schaeffer, and Adalberto Mecarelli. Mai Ghoussoub
Mai Ghoussoub (; 2 November 1952, in Beirut – 17 February 2007, in London) was a Lebanese writer, artist, publisher and human rights activist. She was the co-founder in London of the Saqi bookshop and publishing house. Life Her father, Raymond Ghoussoub, a Maronite Christian, was a professional footballer. She studied at the French lycée in Beirut, then mathematics at the American University of Beirut, and French literature at the Lebanese University, and later sculpture at Morley College and the Henry Moore Studio in London. She was a Trotskyite at the start of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975, but soon became disillusioned and moved on to humanitarian work, establishing two medical dispensaries in a poor Muslim area after the doctors had left and the pharmacies had closed. Farid Mansour (artist)
Farid Mansour (1929–2010) () was a Lebanese sculptor and painter. Biography Born In 1929 in Choueifat - Lebanon, Farid Mansour enrolled in the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA) in 1946, and was also mentored by the Italian artist Fernando Manetti between 1946 and 1949. Seeking financial stability, Mansour migrated to Liberia for several years. He returned to his homeland in the mid-1950s to pursue his artistic career. In 1961, Mansour invited and encouraged by Manetti himself, traveled to Italy specifically to Manetti's town of San Gimignano, where he continued his studies until 1963. In 1964 he joined the Ecole Universelle in Paris for one year, after which he returned to Lebanon again. Moustafa Farroukh
Moustafa Farroukh (; 1901 – 1957) was one of Lebanon's most prominent painters of the 20th century. During his famed career, Farroukh produced over 2000 paintings most of which were acquired by collectors both in Lebanon and abroad. He also wrote five books including a biography. Career He was formally trained in Rome and graduated in 1927 from Rome's Royal College of Fine Arts. He proceeded to Paris and continued further studies under the guidance of Paul Émile Chabas, the president of the Society of French Artists and many other French artists. Over his prosperous career, he exhibited in venues from Paris, Venice, New York City and Beirut. In his Studio in Beirut, he established a permanent exhibition of his artwork in 1932. Derrie Fakhoury
Derrie Fakhoury (1930–2015) was a Lebanese artist. Life Fakhoury was born in Beirut in 1930, and studied painting at the Fine Arts Academy in Beirut. She traveled to Italy to continue her studies in art at the Accademia di belle arti di Roma. Then she joined the Institute of Medal Art of Rome and she excelled in this area. Tagreed Darghouth
Tagreed Darghouth (born 1979) is a Lebanese artist. She was born in Saida and studied painting and sculpting at the Lebanese Institute of Fine Arts in Beirut. She continued her studies at the Ayloul Summer Academy at Darat Al Funoun in Amman with and at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris. Daoud Corm
Daoud Corm (26 June 1852 – 6 June 1930), David Corm in English, was an influential Lebanese painter and the father of writer, industrialist, and philanthropist Charles Corm. He was a teacher and mentor to the young Khalil Gibran as well as Khalil Saleeby and Habib Srour. In 1870 he went to Rome and enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca where he trained under Roberto Bompiani, the Italian court painter. During his five years in Italy, Daoud Corm studied the works of Renaissance artists whose influence was evident throughout his works. He gained official recognition when he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Pope Pius IX (reg 1846-78). Upon his return to Lebanon in 1875, he painted portraits of many Arabs including Abbas II of Egypt (reg 1892–1914) in 1894. Saloua Raouda Choucair
Saloua Raouda Choucair (; June 24, 1916 – January 26, 2017) was a Lebanese painter and sculptor. Life and career Born in 1916 in Ain El Mraisseh, along Beirut's coastal Corniche, Lebanon, Choucair came from a family of doctors, lawyers, engineers and historians. Her father, Salim Rawda (1872-1917) was an expatriate in Australia trading herbs and writing manuscripts on their medicinal values. When he returned to Lebanon in 1910, he met and married Choucair's mother, Zalfa Amin Najjar (1891-1995), a Brummana High School student who was fond of reciting poetry. They had three children: Anis Rawda (1911-1988) was a businessman and a member of the Beirut municipality; Anissa Rawda Najjar (1913-2016) was a social activist, who was married to the late Fouad Najjar; and the youngest, Choucair, became one of the most prominent figures of Lebanese modernism.
