Japanese Rock
, sometimes abbreviated to , is rock music from Japan. Influenced by American and British rock of the 1960s, the first rock bands in Japan performed what is called group sounds, with lyrics almost exclusively in English. Folk rock band Happy End in the early 1970s are credited as the first to sing rock music in the Japanese language. Punk rock bands Boøwy and The Blue Hearts and hard rock/ heavy metal groups X Japan and B'z led Japanese rock in the late 1980s and early 1990s by achieving major mainstream success. Rock bands such as B'z and Mr. Children are among the best selling music acts in Japan. Rock festivals like the Fuji Rock Festival were introduced in the late 90s with attendances reaching a peak of 200,000 people per festival making it the largest outdoor music event in the country. is a Japanese heavy metal (music), heavy metal band that was formed during the early 1980s in Tokyo. They are among the many heavy metal bands founded in Japan during that time and are considered to be one of the most successful and influential, alongside Loudness (band), Loudness and Earthshaker (heavy metal), Earthshaker. History Early years (1981–1985) Anthem was founded in Tokyo during 1980 as a quartet, composed of singer Toshihito Maeda, guitarist Akifumi Koyanagi, bass player Naoto Shibata (also known as "Ski") and drummer Takamasa Ohuchi. Koyanagi left in late 1983 to be replaced by Hiroya Fukuda. In December 1984, vocalist Toshihito Maeda also left and Anthem drafted Eizo Sakamoto for their debut eponymous album, issued in July 1985 by Nexus and licensed to Europe via Roadrunner Records. The Bawdies is a Japanese rock band signed to the Seez Records label and the Getting Better sub-label of Victor Entertainment. The band is heavily influenced by 1950s-1960s beat music and early Rhythm and blues, rhythm & blues styles of music. Background Band members Ryo 'Roy' Watanabe (b.July 7,1983), Yoshihiko 'Jim' Kimura (b. May 26, 1983), and Masahiko ‘Marcy’ Yamaguchi (b. November 8, 1983) became friends while attending elementary school in Setagaya, Tokyo. They met fourth member Taku "Taxman" Funayama (b. November 21, 1983), when he joined the basketball team in which the other three were members. After retiring from the basketball team in their final year of high school the four switched their focus to music. Base Ball Bear is a Japanese rock band from Tokyo that made its major debut in 2006 with EMI Music Japan. Although assembled in autumn 2001, the band formally began in 2002, and started off with self-produced releases. Their style influences include Japanese indie rock bands Number Girl and Supercar, and British rock bands such as Oasis. They have been noted for the "nostalgic" feel of band leader Yūsuke Koide's lyrics, often about teenage life and memories. Base Ball Bear are also known for their contributions to the soundtrack of the movie ''Linda Linda Linda'' (in which bassist Shiori Sekine had a leading role) and performing the themes to the anime series '' Toshokan Sensō'', '' Ōkiku Furikabutte'' and ''Gintama''. is a Japanese rock power trio formed in 2004. The band consists of Iyori Shimizu (lead vocals, guitar), Kazuya Kojima (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Hisashi Kurihara (drums, percussion. The group signed to independent record label Idolsmith Recordings in 2009 and released their debut EP (2009) and studio album (2010). They signed to Universal Sigma in 2011. The band have a major cult following in Japan. The Back Horn
is a Japanese rock band, formed in Tokyo in 1998. History The band got started around April in 1998, when the original members all came to Tokyo from the countryside where they all lived, all for different reasons. They met, and decided to start a band. First called Gyorai, they soon changed their name to The Back Horn. This name was based on Matsuda's misreading of the "backhoe" he used in his construction work. From the beginning, one of the features of the band was a harsh sound and lyrics dealing with decadence and destruction, war, peace, isolation, love and death. In a 2005 interview, the band members listed Nirvana and Radiohead as inspiration for their musical style. Following their first notable performance at the Fuji Rock Festival in 1999, they released a mini-album '' Doko e Yuku'' on Kando Records. (stylized in all caps as BABYMETAL) is a Japanese kawaii metal band consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto as "Su-metal", Moa Kikuchi as "Moametal" and Momoko Okazaki as "Momometal". The band is produced by Kobametal from the Amuse Inc., Amuse talent agency. Their vocals are backed by heavy metal instrumentation, performed by a group of session musicians known as the "Kami Band" at performances. Baad (stylized in all caps) is a Japanese rock band that formed in 1992 and debuted in February 1993 under label Zain Records, currently signed under Giza Studio. As of 2023, its members are vocal Kyouji Yamada, drummer Kazuyoshi Aoki, guitarist Shinichiro Ohta, and bassist Kobayashi Masamichi. Biography The band formation has been completed in 1992 and in 1993 debut single with the single "Donna Toki Demo Hold Me Tight".
