List Of French Formula One Engine Manufacturers
Nine French Formula One engine manufacturers have produced engines either for their own cars or those of other Formula One constructors. Bugatti, Gordini, Matra, Peugeot, Renault and Talbot have designed and produced engines. Renault engines are associated with 12 World Constructors' Championship titles and 11 World Drivers' Championship titles. All engine manufacturers have followed the regulations of Formula One enacted by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). Georges Lucien Raymond Martin (14 March 1930 – 29 July 2017) was a French engineer who designed automobile internal combustion engines, including the Simca Poissy engine that was produced from 1961 until 1991, and the Matra Sports V12 engine for Formula One (F1) and endurance sportscar racing. Career Martin graduated from the Génie mécanique et électrique (Mechanical and Electrical Engineering) department of l'École Spéciale des Travaux Publics (ESTP — the Special School of Public Works). He joined Simca in 1959. In the Simca design office, he designed the Poissy engine that was in production in various displacements for 30 years, from its first appearance in the Simca 1000 in 1961 to the last use under Peugeot ownership in 1991, when it was fitted to the Peugeot 309. Équipe Ligier () is a motorsport team, best known for its Formula One team that operated from to . The team was founded in 1968 by former French rugby union player Guy Ligier as a sports car manufacturer. Sports car origins After retiring from racing following the death of his friend Jo Schlesser, Guy Ligier decided to found his own team and had engineer Michel Têtu develop a sports car named Ligier JS1, JS1 (Schlesser's initials). The Cosworth-powered JS1 took wins at Albi and Montlhéry in 1970, but retired at 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, Le Mans and from the Tour Automobile de France. Shadow Racing Cars was a Formula One and sports car racing team. The sports car racing team, competing in the CanAm series, was founded in 1968 and was based in the United States. Matra MS12 Engine
Matra (an acronym for Mécanique Aviation Traction) was a major French industrial conglomerate. Its business activities covered a wide range of industries, notably aerospace, defence, automotive, motorsports, transport and telecommunications.
