This is a list of Cardinal protectors of Scotland. Protectors represented the interests of a particular religious institution or nation at the Papal court. This particular office was revitalised upon the establishment of the Scots College in Rome by Pope Clement VIII on 5 December 1600, when it was put under the authority of Cardinal Camillo Borghese. The last Cardinal to hold the office died in 1970. Giuseppe Sacripante
Giuseppe Sacripante (19 March 1642 – 4 January 1727) was an Italian Catholic Cardinal who served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. Biography He was born in Narni on 19 March 1642, and was the eldest child of Giacinto Sacripante and Vittoria di Basilis. He studied letters and law, and held a number of administrative posts, before being given a canonry of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. Giovanni Simeoni
Giovanni Simeoni (July 12, 1816 – January 14, 1892) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who was appointed a cardinal in 1875 and served as Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for Propagation of the Faith from 1878 until his death in 1892. Biography Giovanni Simeoni was born in Paliano; his father was a majordomo of the Colonna family. He attended the seminary in Palestrina before going to Rome to study at the '' Collegio Romano'' and ''La Sapienza'' University, where he studied theology and canon law. The Colonna family subsidized his studies. Simeoni was ordained to the priesthood in 1839. Alessandro Franchi (cardinal)
Alessandro Franchi (25 June, 1819 – 31 July, 1878) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop. Biography His father was a notary. He studied at the Pontifical Roman Seminary, where he received his Doctor of Theology degree in 1841, followed by a degree '' in utroque iure'' from the Sapienza University of Rome. In 1842, he was ordained a priest and taken under the sponsorship of Luigi Lambruschini, the Cardinal Secretary of State. In 1848, during the First Italian War of Independence, he was selected to become part of a sensitive diplomatic mission to Emperor Ferdinand I; an unsuccessful attempt to convince the Emperor that he should give up the Habsburg-held territories in Italy. Alessandro Barnabò
Alessandro Barnabò (2 March 1801 – 24 February 1874) was an Italian Catholic Cardinal and Prefect of the Congregation Propaganda Fide. Early life Barnabò was born on 2 March 1801 in Foligno. At the age of 10, he was sent by the French administration in Italy to the Prytanée National Militaire in La Flèche, but he returned to Italy in 1814 to study for the priesthood. He joined the priesthood and was ordained in March 1833. Between his ordination and 1856 he held a number of official positions including Privy chamberlain supernumerary, Consultor to the Propaganda Fide, Keeper of the Seals of the Apostolic Penitentiary and served as a domestic prelate to the Pope. Giacomo Filippo Fransoni (10 December 1775 – 20 April 1856) was an Italian prelate and cardinal who served from 1834 to 1856 as prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith. He was the cardinal priest of the Church of San Lorenzo in Lucina at the time of his death. Charles Erskine (13 February 1739 – 20 March 1811) was an Italian-Scottish papal diplomat and cardinal. Biography He was the son of Colin Erskine, youngest son to Alexander Erskine of Cambo and maternal grandson of Alexander Erskine, 3rd Earl of Kellie, by his marriage to Agatha Gigli of the noble family of Gigli of Anagni. He was educated by Cardinal Henry, Duke of York, at the Scots College, Rome, and was afterwards a successful advocate, becoming a Doctor of Laws in 1770. Pope Pius VI made him pro (''pro tem'')-Auditor and Promoter of the Faith in 1782, also a domestic prelate, canon of St. Peter's Basilica, and Dean of the college of consistorial advocates.
