List Of Arizona State Prisons
There are currently 48 state prisons, geographically grouped into 14 complexes and two correctional treatment facilities, for state prisoners in the U.S. state of Arizona. This number does not include federal prisons, detention centers for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or county jails located in the state. As of 2007 Arizona had exported more than 2000 prisoners to privately run facilities in Oklahoma and Indiana, a number that would have been higher if not for a riot of Arizona prisoners at the GEO Group's New Castle Correctional Facility on April 27, 2007, protesting the practice. As of 2013, the states of Vermont, California and Hawaii export prisoners to facilities in Arizona. Marana Community Correctional Treatment Facility (MCCTF) is one of 13 prison facilities in Arizona housing prisoners of the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC). The facility is located in Marana, Pima County, Arizona, approximately 100 miles south of Phoenix, Arizona. The facility is a secure, minimum custody private prison under contract with the Arizona Department of Corrections to provide custody and substance abuse treatment for 450 adult male offenders who have demonstrated a need for substance or alcohol abuse intervention. Arizona State Prison – Kingman is a privately run minimum/medium-security prison designed to hold 3500 prisoners. It is located in unincorporated Mohave County, Arizona, in Golden Valley. When the idea of the prison was being sold to the residents of Golden Valley it was promised that it would be a prison only for Dui offenders. It was operated by the Management and Training Corporation under contract to the Arizona Department of Corrections until August 2015. MTC had been criticized for allowing the homicidal escape of three violent prisoners in 2010. The state began seeking an alternate provider after it found MTC failed to control riots on July 1, 2 and 4, at Kingman, in July 2015. Because of damage to the prison, the state had to transfer more than 1,000 inmates to other facilities.
