Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network
The Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network (AWMN) is a grassroots wireless community network established in 2002 in Athens, Greece. By August 2010, the network had grown to include 1,120 backbone nodes, with over 2,900 client computers actively linked to it. There is also an association-club that supports the network's objectives. Cultural and geographical context Although the network began in Athens, the capital of Greece, its activities are no longer limited to the city. It covers a geographical area 110 km from North to South and 85 km from West to East, with the most southern point being Palaia Epidavros (Epidaurus) and the most northern point being the town of Nea Artaki on the island of Euboea. The wide expansion of the network allows isolated areas with poor technological and broadband infrastructure to connect with the Athenian network. The Chebucto Community Net (CCN) is a Canadian FreeNet operating in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). It is registered as a non-profit society under Nova Scotia's Registry of Joint Stocks using the name Chebucto Community Net Society. The name "Chebucto" comes from the local l'nu word for Halifax Harbour meaning "big water". Established in June 1994 in what was then the Dalhousie University Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computing Science, then called the Chebucto ''Free'' Net, is now the oldest Internet Service Provider operating in the province of Nova Scotia and one of the first community nets in Canada. Wireless Leiden is a wireless community network in Leiden, Netherlands. History The Wireless Leiden Foundation (founded in 2002) set up a Wi-Fi wireless network in Leiden, the Netherlands, only with the help of volunteers, with some financial support by sponsors. The network is maintained completely by volunteers. The network is accessible free for everybody who wants to use it. This is possible because there are no expenses of any importance, as the volunteers who build and maintain the network do not receive any payment for their contribution and the materials needed were donated. The software used in the network is completely open source. Internet provider Demon Internet, donates free Internet access to the foundation.
