Sporting Clube de Portugal, founded Sporting Club de Portugal (), otherwise referred to as Sporting CP, often known abroad as Sporting Lisbon , is a Portuguese professional sports club based in Lisbon. It is best known for the professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Founded on 1 July 1906, Sporting is one of the " Big Three" clubs in Portugal that have never been relegated from Primeira Liga, along with rivals Benfica and Porto. Sporting are nicknamed ''Leões'' (Lions), for the symbol used in the middle of the club's crest, and ''Verde e Brancos'' (Green and Whites), for the shirt colour that are in (horizontal) stripes. Their home ground has been the Estádio José Alvalade, built in 2003, which replaced the previous one, built in 1956. Alejandro Scopelli Casanova (, ; 12 May 1908 – 23 October 1987) was an Italian Argentine football player and coach. A striker, he played for Argentina between 1929 and 1941, and competed at the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup. He also represented the Italy national football team on one occasion. Playing career Born in La Plata, Scopelli started his career in Argentina with Estudiantes de La Plata where he became part of the legendary side nicknamed "Los Profesores". In 1931 he scored 31 goals for the team but was beaten to the golden boot by team mate Alberto Zozaya's 33. In 1933 Scopelli moved to Italy where he played for Roma. Álvaro Cardoso
Álvaro Cardoso da Silva (14 January 1914 – 12 May 2004) was a Portuguese footballer who played as a central defender. He was known as Senhor Cardoso during his highly successful spell at Sporting. Club career Cardoso played for Vitória Setúbal from 1933 to 1938. In 1938, he joined Sporting, where he would spend ten years at the Lisbon club. He is regarded as one of the best captains of Sporting, having worn the armband during the age of the famous ''Cinco Violinos'' ("Five Violins"). In this period, he won the Primeira Divisão four times, the Taça de Portugal four times, as well as the Campeonato de Lisboa four times. His final match for Sporting was in the 1948 Taça de Portugal Final, in a 3–1 win over Belenenses. In all competitions for Sporting, he made 252 appearances and scored three goals.
