Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. Victor Gauntlett (tennis)
Victor Reginald Gauntlett (30 January 1884 – 12 February 1949) was a South African male tennis player. Biography He competed for the South Africa in the tennis event at the 1908 Summer Olympics where he took part in the men's singles and doubles event. In the singles competition he was beaten in the first round by Josiah Ritchie in straight sets. In the doubles he paired up with Harold Kitson and reached the quarterfinals which they lost in five sets to the British team of Clement Cazalet and Charles Dixon. Gauntlett reached the finals of the 1908 men's singles event at the South African Championships but was defeated by Harold Kitson in five sets. He was runner-up at the 1908 All England Plate tournament, a tennis competition held at the Wimbledon Championships which consisted of players who were defeated in the first or second rounds of the singles competition. Gordon Forbes
Gordon Forbes (21 February 1934 – 9 December 2020) was a South African professional tennis player and author. Forbes won the singles title of the South African Championships in 1959 and 1961 and was runner-up in 1955, 1962, 1963 and 1964. He won the Tuscaloosa Grass Court Invitational in 1962, defeating Rod Laver in the final. During the 1950s and 1960s, he was the doubles partner of countryman Abe Segal. They were considered one of the best doubles teams in the world. Career Forbes learnt to play tennis in his childhood on the family farm. At age 12, he played and won his first junior tournament in East London. Forbes won the singles title of the South African Championships in 1959 and 1961 and was runner-up in 1955, 1962, 1963 and 1964. Ellis Ferreira (born 19 February 1970) is a former professional male tennis player from South Africa. He played collegiately at the University of Alabama, earning all-SEC and all-American honors. Ferreira competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in men's doubles with Wayne Ferreira (to whom he is unrelated). Wayne Ferreira
Wayne Richard Ferreira (born 15 September 1971) is a South African former professional tennis player and current tennis coach. Career As a junior player, Ferreira was ranked world no. 1 junior doubles player and no. 6 junior singles player. He won the junior doubles title at the US Open in 1989. Ferreira turned professional in 1989. He won his first ATP doubles title in Adelaide in 1991. 1992 was Ferreira's breakthrough year on the tour. He started out by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. In June he won his first ATP singles title at Queen's Club, London. His second singles title came just a few weeks later at Schenectady, New York. Norman Farquharson
Norman Gordon Farquharson (18 July 1907 – 11 August 1992) was a male tennis player from South Africa. In 1931 Farquharson and his compatriot partner Vernon Kirby were runners-up in the doubles final of the French Championships, losing in straight sets to the American pair George Lott and John Van Ryn. In 1937 they again reached the doubles final in which they lost to the German pair Gottfried von Cramm and Henner Henkel in four sets. Farquharson won the singles title of the South African Championships on four occasions (1934, 1935, 1936, 1938). Between 1929 and 1937 he played in twelve ties for the South African Davis Cup team. Evelyn Eustace Fannin (28 June 1915 – 25 November 1997) was a South African tennis player. Fannin was born in Ixopo in June 1915 and educated at Hilton College. In 1947, he won the doubles title at the French Championships with compatriot Eric Sturgess defeating American Tom Brown and Australian Bill Sidwell in four sets. Two years later, in 1949, they again reached the doubles final but this time lost to the American team of Pancho Gonzales and Frank Parker in four sets. Trevor Fancutt
Trevor Fancutt (14 July 1934 – 23 December 2022) was a South African tennis player. In 1960 Fancutt, partnering Jan Lehane, won the mixed doubles title of the Australian Championships, defeating Christine Truman and Martin Mulligan in straight sets. In 1957, he played in two ties for the South African Davis Cup team and compiled a match record of two wins and two losses. In August 1957, he beat Alex Olmedo in the final of the international tournament in Kitzbühel, Austria in three straight sets. Fancutt married Australian singles semi finalist Daphne Seeney. Cliff Drysdale
Eric Clifford Drysdale (born 26 May 1941) is a South African former tennis player. After a career as a highly ranked professional player in the 1960s and early 1970s, he became a well-known tennis announcer. Drysdale won the singles title at the Dutch Open in Hilversum in 1963 and 1964. In 1965, he reached the singles final of the 1965 U. S. Championships and he won the singles title at the German Championships. He defeated Rod Laver in the fourth round of the first US Open in 1968. During his Open-era career, Drysdale captured five singles titles and six doubles titles, including the 1972 US Open doubles crown with Roger Taylor. He was a pioneer of the two-handed backhand shot, which he used to great effect during his playing career. George Dodd (tennis)
George Henry Dodd (16 January 1882 – 21 July 1957) was a South African tennis player. George was the son of Douglas William Dodd, an Anglican minister from Eton, Buckinghamshire, and Elizabeth Saffrona (née Pruen). He competed for South Africa in the tennis event at the 1920 Summer Olympics where he took part in the men's singles and doubles events. In the singles competition he reached the fourth round in which he lost to Ichiya Kumagae in straight sets. In the doubles he partnered Cecil Blackbeard and reached the third round. Dodd won the 1912 men's singles title at the South African Championships, defeating R.F. Le Sueur in the final in five sets.
