Myanmar, also known as Burma, has many organisations and societies set up by the government. Although they are loosely termed NGOs, they are partly under the supervision and receive funding from the government. The Myanmar Red Cross, for example, does carry out red cross related duties, but is also considered as a potential reserve force in times of conflict, while the War Veterans' Organisation is a quasi-political society. Myanmar, officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar; and also referred to as Burma (the official English name until 1989), is a country in northwest Southeast Asia. Myanmar Dental Association
The Myanmar Dental Association (; MDA) is a professional association established in 1979 which has more than 4,000 members. The association publishes ''Myanmar Dental Journal'' every year. It arranges Myanmar Dental Conference in which FDI World Dental Federation speakers also make their presentations. Myanmar Dental Association and Myanmar Dental Council are the only two professional organizations for Myanmar dentists. Myanmar Maternal And Child Welfare Association
The Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (, abbreviated MMCWA) is a non-governmental organisation in Burma which aims to protects mothers and their children in the country. Although it dates back to 1948, it was supported by the Burmese government when it was established in its new centre in April 1991, particularly because the organisation aimed to cover much of the country in protection. As of 2008, the MMCWA functions with 324 township associations, and 11,233 branch associations formed to undertake health and welfare activities nationwide. It has over 2,000,000 volunteer workers, serving the organisation throughout Burma. Myanmar Medical Association
The Myanmar Medical Association (; abbreviated MMA; formerly the Burma Medical Association) is Myanmar's only professional organisation of physicians. Founded in 1949 by Dr. Shwe Thwin, the association has approximately 17,000 members (2011). It is administered by a central executive committee and is divided into 33 different societies dedicated to a broad range of medical specialties. Myanmar Red Cross Society
Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) was founded in 1937 and it was earlier called Burma Red Cross. It has its headquarters in Yangon. History In 1920, the Society came into existence as a branch of the Indian Red Cross Society. When Burma was politically separated from India in 1937, the organisation attained national status and was recognised as Burma Red Cross Society. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recognised it as a National Society in 1939. The Society was admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 1946. The Burma Red Cross Act was enacted in 1959 and amended subsequently in 1964, 1971 and 1988. The 1959 (MRCS) Act confers responsibility to the National Society in implementing humanitarian activities and alleviating human suffering. Myanmar Veterans' Organisation
The Myanmar War Veterans' Organisation (; abbreviated MWVO) is the official veterans' organisation for military personnel who have retired from the Myanmar Armed Forces (Tatmadaw). History Veterans who retired from the Tatmadaw after serving in various roles assigned to them since national independence, formed various local veterans' organisations since 1948. Those organisations were officially organised in 1973 and the Constitution of the Veterans' Organisation and fundamental rules were adopted in 1975. Necessary amendments to the Constitution and the Fundamental Rules were made in 1976, 1982, and 1986. Myanmar Writers And Journalists Association
The Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association (; MWJA) represents writers and journalists in Myanmar. At first closely associated with the Ministry of Information, in the 2011-2012 period the MWJA achieved greater independence. Early years Myanmar writers formed an association on 8 March 1944, during British colonial rule. In November 1993 the Myanmar Writers Association was reconstituted as the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association.
