This is a list of silicon producers. The industry involves several very different stages of production. Production starts at silicon metal, which is the material used to gain high purity silicon. High purity silicon in different grades of purity is used for growing silicon ingots, which are sliced to wafers in a process called wafering. Compositionally pure polycrystalline silicon wafers are useful for photovoltaics. Dislocation-free and extremely flat single-crystal silicon wafers are required in the manufacture of computer chips. Grid-connected solar photovoltaics (PV) is the fastest growing energy technology in the world, growing from a cumulative installed capacity of 7.7 GW in 2007, to 320 GW in 2016. In 2016, 93% of the global PV cell manufacturing capacity utilized crystalline silicon (cSi) technology, representing a commanding lead over rival forms of PV technology, such as cadmium telluride (CdTe), amorphous silicon (aSi), and copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS). In 2016, manufacturers in China and Taiwan met the majority of global PV module demand, accounting for 68% of all modules, followed by the rest of Asia at 14%. Siltronic AG is a German manufacturer of wafers made of hyperpure silicon headquartered in Munich. History In 1953, it all began in Burghausen Germany as Wacker Chemie was already researching and developing hyperpure silicon, which lead to the first semiconductor silicon to be produced in 1958. The number of employees were increased in 1961 as they began to add products, such as monocrystals, which were also distributed internationally. In 1965, Wacker acquired Monosilicon, a silicon producer in Los Angeles, USA.
