The president of the American Statistical Association is the head of the American Statistical Association (ASA). According to the association's bylaws, the president is an corporate title, officer, and a member of the board of directors and of the executive committee. Elections for the position are held annually, in which all full members are eligible to vote. The term in office is typically three years, as president-elect and past president are also official positions. The American Statistical Association (ASA) is the main professional organization for statisticians and related professionals in the United States. It was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 27, 1839, and is the second-oldest continuously operating professional society in the U.S. behind the Massachusetts Medical Society (founded in 1781). ASA services statisticians, quantitative scientists, and users of statistics across many academic areas and applications. Louis Israel Dublin (November 1, 1882 – March 7, 1969) was a Jewish American statistician. As vice president and statistician of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, he promoted progressive and socially useful insurance underwriting policies. As a scholar, Dublin was an important figure in the establishment of demography as a social-scientific discipline in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. Dublin was interested in eugenics but as a Jew of recent immigrant extraction criticized eugenicists for equating biological superiority with Nordic origins. Dublin was born in Kovno, Russian Empire. He came to the U.S. in 1886 with his parents Max and Sarah (Rosensweig). Dublin obtained his bachelor's in 1901 at City College of New York. He earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1904. Joseph Adna Hill (1860–1938) was an American statistician. Biography Joseph Adna Hill was born at Stewartstown, New Hampshire on May 5, 1860. He was descended from "an elite, old-line New England family," and attended many well-regarded educational institutions. After graduating from Phillips Exeter, he attended Harvard University, graduating in 1885, and completed his graduate studies at the University of Halle (PhD) in 1892. He published ''The English Income Tax with Special Reference to Administration and Method of Assessment'' (1899). In 1899 he took on statistical work for the United States Census Bureau, of which he became chief statistician in 1909. Wesley Clair Mitchell (August 5, 1874 – October 29, 1948) was an American economist known for his empirical work on business cycles and for guiding the National Bureau of Economic Research in its first decades. Mitchell was referred to as Thorstein Veblen's "star student." Allyn Abbott Young (September 19, 1876 – March 7, 1929) was an American economist. Over his career, he served as president of the American Statistical Association in 1917 and the American Economic Association in 1925, making him one of the few individuals to lead both organizations. In 1929, Young was president of Section F (Economics) of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. He died in London at the age of 52 from pneumonia during an influenza epidemic.
