A think tank, or public policy institute, is a research institute that performs research and advocacy concerning topics such as social policy, political strategy, economics, military, technology, and culture. Most think tanks are non-governmental organizations, but some are semi-autonomous agencies within a government, and some are associated with particular political parties, businesses, or the military. Think tanks are often funded by individual donations, with many also accepting government grants. Think tanks publish articles and studies, and sometimes draft legislation on particular matters of policy or society. This information is then used by governments, businesses, media organizations, social movements, or other interest groups. The Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) is a bipartisan, non-profit organisation providing thought leadership and policy perspectives on the economic and social issues affecting Australia, established in 1960. Western Australia Policy Forum
The Western Australia Policy Forum (WAPF) was a think tank based in Western Australia. It was independently funded and was established in 2007. It was the first think tank in Australia, which has a federal system of government, concerned solely with the issues of one particular States of Australia, State. It is no longer currently active. WAPF papers and essays from its range of contributing authors were focused on those issues relevant to Western Australia. Its initial papers have been concerned with aviation, desalination and the State Budget. United States Studies Centre
The United States Studies Centre (USSC) is a think tank based at the University of Sydney. It is dedicated to the analysis of American foreign policy, economic security, emerging technology, politics, society and culture—and how it impacts Australia, the Indo-Pacific region and the world. The Centre aims to increase understanding of the United States in Australia and enrich the Australia–United States relationship. In addition to its policy-focussed research, it also teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students. Sydney Institute
The Sydney Institute is a privately funded Australian policy forum founded on the 23 of August, 1989. The institute took over the resources of the New South Wales division of the Institute of Public Affairs. Columnist and writer Gerard Henderson is the executive director of the institute. His wife, Anne Henderson, who is also an author, is the deputy director. The Sydney Institute has been described as a "right-aligned policy think tank", comparable to organizations such as the American Enterprise Institute and the Manhattan Institute. Gerard and Anne Henderson had previously run the South Australian branch of the Institute of Public Affairs, and run foul of the state Minister for Health who banned cigarette advertising. Strategic And Defence Studies Centre
The Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (SDSC) is a university-based institute that is situated in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University. It is Australia's oldest-established centre for the study of strategic, defence and wider security issues and a leading regional think tank on these topics. The centre was established in 1966 by Professor T.B.
