List Of Pennsylvania Area Codes
This is a list of telephone area codes of Pennsylvania. In 1947, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company divided Pennsylvania into four numbering plan areas (NPAs) and assigned distinct area codes for each. Since 1995, several relief actions in form of area code splits and overlay complex, overlays have expanded the list of area codes. As a result, all numbering plan areas are overlay complexes and ten-digit dialing is mandatory statewide. A telephone numbering plan is a type of numbering scheme used in telecommunication to assign telephone numbers to subscriber telephones or other telephony endpoints. Telephone numbers are the addresses of participants in a telephone network, reachable by a system of destination code routing. Telephone numbering plans are defined world-wide, as well as within each of the administrative regions of the public switched telephone network (PSTN), and in private telephone networks. In public numbering systems, geographic location typically plays a role in the sequence of numbers assigned to each telephone subscriber. Area codes 570 and 272 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northeast quadrant of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Area code 724 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in western and southwestern Pennsylvania, including a portion of the suburbs of Pittsburgh. It was created in an area code split of area code 412 on February 1, 1998, which made the 412 numbering plan area (NPA) an enclave for the city, with 724 surrounding 412.
