Each Paralympic Games have a mascot, often an animal native to the area or occasionally human figures representing the cultural heritage. Nowadays, most of the merchandise aimed at young people focuses on the mascots, rather than the Paralympic flag or organization logos. Noggi and Joggi, the mascots of the 1980 Summer Paralympics are possibly the first Paralympic mascots. However, since the 1988 Summer Paralympics, all of the Paralympic mascots have been associated with their Olympic counterparts. Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games or Paralympics is a periodic series of international multisport events involving athletes with a range of disability, disabilities. There are Winter Paralympic Games, Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, have been held shortly after the corresponding Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The Paralympics began as a small gathering of British World War II veterans in Stoke Mandeville Games, 1948. 1992 Summer Paralympics
The 1992 Summer Paralympics (; ) were the ninth Paralympic Games to be held. They were held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. In addition, the 1992 Paralympic Games for Persons with mental handicap were held immediately after the regular Paralympics in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Host city selection Barcelona is the second-largest city in Spain and the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia, and the hometown of then- IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch and the famous European club, FC Barcelona that from the beginning of the candidacy provided support and financially helped the project. Blaze (Paralympic Mascot)
Blaze, also known as Blaze the Phoenix, was the mascot of the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta. It was created by Atlanta artist Trevor Stone Irvin. Blaze is a phoenix, a mythical bird that rises from ashes to experience a renewed life. The phoenix appears in the folklore of many global cultures and symbolizes renewal, perseverance and determination. The phoenix has also long been the symbol of Atlanta's rebirth after its devastation in the American Civil War. Blaze, with his bright colors, height and broad wing span, represents the personification of the will and determination of people with a disability to achieve full lives for themselves. Blaze gained a solid fan base, and received more positive reception than the 1996 Olympic mascot, Izzy. The 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, were held from August 16 to 25. It was the first Paralympics to get mass media sponsorship, and had a budget of USD $81 million. Sondre Nordheim
Sondre Norheim, born Sondre Auverson, (10 June 1825 – 9 March 1897) was a Norwegian skier and pioneer of modern skiing. Sondre Norheim is known as the father of Telemark skiing. Background Sondre Auverson was born at Øverbø, a little cotter's farm and raised in Morgedal in the municipality of Kviteseid in Telemark, Norway. Skiing was a popular activity in Morgedal. Sondre took to downhill skiing as a recreational activity, rising to local fame for his skills. He made important innovations in skiing technology by designing new equipment, such as different bindings and shorter skis with curved sides to facilitate turns. He also designed the Telemark ski, which is the prototype of all those now produced. Sondre Norheim was regarded by his contemporaries as a master of the art of skiing. The 1994 Winter Paralympics (; ), the sixth Paralympic Winter Games, were held in Lillehammer, Norway, from 10 to 19 March 1994.The Lillehammer Paralympics were the second time that the Games were held in Norway, after the 1980 Winter Paralympics in Geilo. 471 athletes from 31 countries participated, with Norway claiming the most gold medals ahead of Germany. Lorenza Böttner
Lorenza Böttner (6 March 1959 – 13 January 1994) was a Chilean–German disabled transgender multidisciplinary visual artist. Born in Chile, she moved to Germany following the amputation of both of her arms as a child, where she studied and began a career in art. Using several art media, including performance pieces and a method called "danced painting", she depicted social outcasts, and she portrayed Petra during opening and the closing ceremonies at the 1992 Summer Paralympics. Her self-portraiture featured eroticized and nurturing depictions of herself. Diagnosed with HIV in 1985, she died in 1994 of AIDS-related complications in Munich. While she did not receive widespread recognition of her work during her life, ''documenta'' and Paul B. Preciado began showing her work from 2016 onward, and she is now recognized for her contributions to art history and representing disability in art.
