Neal McCann
Neal McCann (1800January 30, 1866), sometimes referred to in print as Col. McCann, was a 19th-century American state legislator, farmer, stockman, slave owner, and slave trader based in Lexington, Kentucky, United States. He would have been familiar with the Todd family of Lexington that produced Mary Todd Lincoln, as he lived on Todds road, endorsed a boarding school operated by a Hugh Todd, sold dry goods for a Richard B. Todd, and served in the legislature in 1841 representing Fayette County, Kentucky, Fayette County along with Abraham Lincoln's father-in-law, Robert Smith Todd. Biography McCann was most likely properly "Neal McCann III" as both Neal McCann Sr. And Neal McCann Jr. were tax-paying residents of Fayette County around the time the youngest McCann was born in 1800. History Of Slavery In Kentucky
The history of slavery in Kentucky dates from the earliest permanent European settlements in the state, until the end of the Civil War. Kentucky was classified as the Upper South or a border state, and enslaved African Americans represented 24% by 1830, but declined to 19.5% by 1860 on the eve of the Civil War. The majority of enslaved people in Kentucky were concentrated in the cities of Louisville and Lexington, in the fertile Bluegrass Region as well the Jackson Purchase, both the largest hemp- and tobacco-producing areas in the state. In addition, many enslaved people lived in the Ohio River counties where they were most often used in skilled trades or as house servants. Few people lived in slavery in the mountainous regions of eastern and southeastern Kentucky. Edward Stone (slave Trader)
Edward Stone (September 17, 1826), also known as Ned Stone, was an American slave trader. He participated in the Slave trade in the United States, interregional slave trade between Maryland, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Stone had a slave jail under his house, which was built in the 1810s near Paris, Kentucky. Stone was killed on the Ohio River in 1826 by slaves he was transporting south for sale. Biography Edward Stone was originally from the Piedmont region of Virginia, Virginia Piedmont region and migrated to Bourbon County with three older brothers in the early 1800s. He began trading in slaves sometime before 1816. Stone was one of the handful of Kentucky slave traders who openly advertised early in the 19th century. Warren B. Offutt (February 13, 1928 – September 20, 2017) was an American amateur astronomer and amateur radio operator. Offutt is credited by the Minor Planet Center with the discovery of 17 asteroids and has notably collaborated with professional astronomers in observing Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). In 1999 he won the Amateur Achievement Award of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. Offutt and his wife, Beverly (since deceased), moved from Illinois to New Mexico when he retired from engineering, specializing in precision astrometry of faint objects in the Solar System. He operates the ''W & B Observatory'' () in the U.S. village of Cloudcroft, New Mexico, in the Sacramento Mountains, at an altitude of 2500 m (8300 ft).
